Kinéis and Semtech make satellite connectivity more accessible for the Internet of Things (IoT) by reusing standard terrestrial solutions.

This complementarity will provide global coverage to millions of users in a simple and direct manner.

Kinéis spatial connectivity easily integrated into Semtech chips

Kinéis and Semtech are proud to announce this strategic collaboration that integrates satellite and terrestrial IoT into a single electronic chip. Kinéis is a French satellite operator and global connectivity provider for the Internet of Things (IoT), offering near real-time data transmission to end-users with low bandwidth (small messages) and very low power consumption. Semtech is a global provider of high-performance semiconductors, IoT LoRa® and cellular systems, and high-quality connectivity and cloud services.

Thanks to this collaboration, users of Semtech LoRa Edge™ chips (including LR1110 and LR1120) can now have global IoT connectivity by leveraging Kinéis satellite connectivity in addition to terrestrial LoRaWAN® connectivity, without adding additional electronic modules. This Kinéis-Semtech collaboration paves a simple way to implement hybrid terrestrial-satellite devices supporting multiple standard connectivity protocols.

Specifically, with Semtech LR1110 chips, a user of terrestrial LoRaWAN IoT connectivity can enhance the functionalities of their applications to:

Prevent outages with built-in network resilience

To avoid fallout from internet connectivity outages, here’s what you need to do.

By iONLINE

Our world today is defined by digital dependence and constant connectivity, and enterprises face many challenges, including cyber threats and infrastructure vulnerabilities. Robust network resilience has never been more crucial. As a cellular connectivity provider at the forefront of mobile and IoT connectivity, we understand the importance of safeguarding against disruptions, and our solutions are geared for this. Here’s how.

Resilience refers to a network’s ability to detect, respond to, recover from, and adapt to faults and challenges to normal operation without downtime or functionality loss. It is crucial for success and longevity.

David Farquharson, founder and CEO of iONLINE Connected Networks, an enterprise private LTE/5G provider supplying IoT connectivity solutions globally, likens a lack of network resilience to trying to drive a car without fuel: it simply won’t move and is a risky game to play.

He says: “Clients are looking to grow, expand, and scale their businesses and without network resilience, their operations can come to a complete standstill. This impacts not only the availability of their products but also their brand reputation and financial performance.”

A resilience plan is essential to mitigate risks, Farquharson adds.

“This is where our role becomes critical. By providing resilient solutions, we prepare our customers for the inevitable challenges, ensuring that, when faced with disruptions, they can continue to operate smoothly.”

Resilience failure in real life

Farquharson exemplifies this with the recent widespread outage experienced by AT&T in the USA, which left thousands of companies without connectivity.

“In the USA, our solution aggregates all three major carriers, enabling multi-carrier resilience on a single SIM. So, when AT&T’s network went down recently, our clients experienced zero downtime. As an example, one of our clients is NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. At the time of this AT&T outage, NOAA was able to continue reporting on weather systems and patterns and provide forecasts and warnings without interruption – crucial information on which a lot of people depend. Without the resilience of our solution, this would not have been the case.”

A similar situation was also seen recently when the subsea cables off the African coast were severed. “Thousands of companies went down when their supporting network was impacted, but iONLINE’s network did not,” Farquharson explains. “Our connectivity solution continued unhindered. Our SIMs can connect to multiple carriers, with multiple breakouts to different links, making our network highly resilient. This allowed us to maintain connectivity for our clients.”

iONLINE FlexiSIM network resilience

iONLINE recently launched FlexiSIM™, its intelligent network switching (eUICC) SIM, in the USA. Offering multi-network resilience, FlexiSIM provides local and global connectivity, always ensuring the best connection, regardless of location. It connects in more than 189 countries, on over 700 carriers.

FlexiSIM: an ideal solution for enterprises

FlexiSIM is a network IoT SIM with tens of thousands of unique connectivity options differentiated by country, carrier, interconnect, breakout, price, and more. While traditional global SIMs break out at a single location, FlexiSIM breaks out locally in-country, decreasing latency and improving performance. It can be remotely updated with new carrier information over the air, controlling in which countries and to which carriers it can connect.

Several international organizations already benefit from FlexiSIM, including NOAA, Fujifilm, AIoTSense, and Fidelity ADT. Fidelity ADT is the largest security services provider to large-scale enterprises in Southern Africa. They use thousands of FlexiSIM SIM cards to run their operations and keep their staff, the public, and the assets in their care safe. This includes critical infrastructure such as airports, government, health and education departments, as well as hospitality venues, casinos, shopping centres, and residential housing estates and their occupants.

Resilience cannot be overlooked

“The recent massive outages in the USA and Africa are a stark reminder of the importance of network resilience,” says Farquharson. “Connectivity is so much more than a service; it’s the lifeline of modern enterprises; fueling operations, empowering innovation and connecting us globally. iONLINE is proud that, amid widespread disruptions, our clients remained not just operational but ahead of the pack, flourishing where others faltered.”

Chirp Network joins peaq to provide universal connectivity for DePINs

Chirp delivers powerful telecommunications connectivity for decentralized physical infrastructure networks on peaq

peaq, the layer-1 blockchain for DePIN and machine RWAs, announces the expansion of its ecosystem as telecommunications provider Chirp Network joins to provide decentralized connectivity for smart devices.

Chirp is building a unified, multi-protocol decentralized connectivity network that will enable the exchange of data over any supported protocol and from any distance. The network includes Chirp’s “Blackbird” gateway devices, already spread across 33 countries. These gateways provide connectivity for other IoT hardware across a variety of channels, including LoRaWAN, LoRa 2.4 gHz, BLE, and more.

Powered by Chirp’s LTE networks, Blackbirds can connect devices anywhere in the world, enabling entire networks and fleets to exchange data on a borderless backbone seamlessly. Chirp is joining peaq to grant DePINs a reliable and versatile way to connect smart devices to global networks over any major Internet of Things (IoT) protocol.

XMAQUINA, the project behind the world’s first fully autonomous tokenized robot cafe, will be the first DePIN in the peaq ecosystem to tap Chirp Network as its connectivity layer. XMAQUINA’s tokenized robotic barista, recently unveiled at the TOKEN2049 conference in Dubai, uses Chirp to link with peaq, exchanging data with the blockchain via Chirp’s IoT connectivity layer, which enables it to operate autonomously.

Chirp will also be providing connectivity for ELOOP, a project enabling tokenized investment in DePINs, via the peaq network, as well as Silencio — a DePIN on peaq rewarding people with crypto for collecting local noise pollution data.

Chirp’s integration with peaq creates a backbone for devices on peaq, enabling DePIN builders to tap the Chirp Network as their connectivity layer. By doing so, they can launch their dApps faster without having to worry about roaming contracts to ensure global connectivity.

As part of the integration, Chirp will create an endpoint layer for devices on peaq — a service that will enable them to communicate with the peaq blockchain — and set up an API to give builders more flexibility. It will also launch a data handling service for DePIN devices using SIM cards, such as smartphones and tablets.

Chirp will also build a peaq integration adapter – a handy tool for builders looking to customize their integration with peaq and leverage the blockchain as the data storage layer for their own DePINs.

Tim Kravchunovsky, founder of Chirp Network, says: “Reaching true decentralization is no trivial matter. Our integration with peaq will bring the DePINs building in its ecosystem one major step closer to it — ultimately resulting in a world whose infrastructure backbone is run by its users, not Big Tech. This integration boosts peaq’s position as the leading layer-1 for DePIN projects.”

“Decentralized connectivity and networking is an important function for any DePIN,” adds Till Wendler, co-founder of peaq.

“peaq’s integration with Chirp unlocks this crucial feature for all DePINs in the ecosystem, enabling devices all over the world to communicate via a people-owned network. Chirp’s agnostic approach to wireless protocols will assist DePIN builders in bringing the largest-ever number of IoT devices on-chain.”

Trusted Connectivity Alliance Reports that Consumer eSIM Adoption Doubled in 2023 as Digitalisation of SIM Market Accelerates

Consumer adoption of eSIM technology continues to grow rapidly, according to exclusive market monitoring figures released today by Trusted Connectivity Alliance (TCA).

The latest data shows that consumer eSIM profile downloads* more than doubled in 2023, increasing 109% year-on-year.

Growth was predominantly driven by accelerating adoption within the North American market, where the wide availability and demand for eSIM-only smartphone models has seen leading mobile operators transition to ‘digital-first’ strategies. Adoption rates also doubled across Asia and Western Europe.

Future growth in consumer eSIM adoption is expected to be boosted by the launch of eSIM-only smartphones across more regions, coupled with the broader availability of eSIM-enabled devices. Rebounding levels of international travel —anticipated to surpass pre-pandemic levels in 2024—also stand to support increased uptake as consumers turn to eSIM for greater choice and convenience when roaming.

The overall upswing in consumer adoption was supported by significant ongoing investment in eSIM Subscription Manager (SM) platforms, which enable the remote provisioning and lifecycle management of eSIMs. The number of deployed consumer eSIM SM platforms rose by 25% in 2023 as mobile operators continued to bolster their digital capabilities.

“For technologies to be widely adopted, they must be safe and reliable, provide a great experience and, most importantly, deliver real value,” comments Bertrand Moussel, Chair of the TCA Board. “Our latest data makes it clear that wider eSIM availability is translating into strong adoption, with consumers across the world now realising the benefits of flexible and seamless connectivity.”

TCA provides exclusive statistical insight into the global SIM and eSIM ecosystem based on members’ market data, offering authoritative insight which is trusted by stakeholders across the mobile industry. Other key industry trends in 2023 included:

Strong Foundation for Growing eSIM Adoption Across Automotive and IoT Verticals

M2M eSIM adoption—predominantly focused across automotive use-cases—was also supported by a 12% increase in the deployment of M2M eSIM SM platforms.

Looking ahead, global standardisation efforts such as GSMA’s eSIM for IoT Specifications (SGP.31 and SGP.32) will play an important role in promoting increased eSIM adoption across IoT verticals. The specifications introduce new, dedicated features to meet specific IoT requirements, simplifying deployments at massive scale and addressing the challenges associated with remotely provisioning and managing constrained IoT devices.

eSIM Volumes Resilient Despite Significant Economic Uncertainty

TCA is also the only organisation to offer a quantitative global view of eSIM shipment volumes, providing both actual and forecast data. eSIM shipments collectively reported by TCA members decreased marginally by 2% to 374 million units, with TCA estimating that the total available market for eSIM was 390 million units in 2023.

Notably, volumes remained stable in the face of strong macro-economic headwinds. Global inflationary pressures and the ‘cost-of-living’ crisis reduced overall consumer demand for smartphones and mobile subscriptions in 2023, though easing inflation towards the end of the year points towards a more positive outlook for 2024. The ongoing impact of the global chip shortage—which saw operators overstock in 2022 to mitigate potential supply chain pressures—also tempered demand but is anticipated to rebalance towards normal levels in 2024.

Digitalisation of the SIM Market Accelerates

The market for ‘traditional’ SIM was similarly shaped by broader macro-economic factors, with TCA estimating the total available market for SIM (excluding eSIM) reduced by 7% to 3.8 billion units in 2023. There was also a clear trend signalling the increasing digitalisation of the overall SIM market amid accelerating eSIM adoption in key regions such as North America.

Moussel adds: “As the evolution of the SIM ecosystem gathers pace, TCA is committed to bringing together stakeholders to address emerging opportunities and challenges. By collaborating on initiatives that increase interoperability, promote trust and support sustainable innovation across the secure connectivity ecosystem, the full promise of the global digital economy can be realised.”

* eSIM profile downloads, also known as eSIM profile transactions, refers to the number of times a mobile operator profile was downloaded.

Qt Group streamlines UI development for industrial IoT with Qualcomm

Qt Group collaborates with Qualcomm to vastly reduce time-to-market for IoT manufacturers.

Qt Group, and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. are collaborating to streamline development of advanced graphical user interfaces (GUI) and software quality assurance for industrial IoT devices.

The combined force of Qt’s cross-platform development tools and Qualcomm Technologies’ means IoT manufacturers could significantly accelerate their devices’ time-to-market.

Qualcomm Technologies, one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers, has long provided processors for devices in industries spanning smartphones, automobiles, Extended Reality, and IoT. Porting Qt Group’s platform on Qualcomm Technologies’ software significantly streamlines how software vendors develop and test UI solutions with Qualcomm Technologies’ advanced processors. It also greatly increases the ease and speed with which hardware vendors can, at scale, develop Systems on Modules (SoM) – tiny computer systems with ready-made components that can be used to easily create embedded electronic devices (from robots to security cameras).

In addition to these UI capabilities, OEMs accessing Qualcomm Technologies’ processors that support Qt can also access Qt Group’s intuitive, user-friendly software development and quality assurance tools, drastically lowering production barriers for manufacturers.

“When you tune out the noise surrounding tech innovation today, what is it really at the end of the day that impacts end users the most? It’s the user experience – specifically the user interface,” says Roger Mazzella, Senior Product Manager at Qt Group. “At Qt Group, our team has been proud to collaborate with Qualcomm Technologies in the automotive industry over the years. Now, we get to expand the benefits of all that groundwork to the IoT market, to which Qualcomm Technologies is well suited. Their high-powered processors handle data-heavy communication while providing ultra-fast performance that developers and end users expect.”

“The benefit of Qt’s technologies is that they already have a history of implementation across 70 industries,” says Juhapekka Niemi, Senior Vice President, Product Management at Qt Group.

“We will give hardware and software vendors for IoT the UI/UX development and QA tools they need right out of the box. Since these vendors don’t have to perform any integrations themselves, the ease of developing GUIs significantly cuts down the time it takes to launch their products.”

By leveraging Qt’s development tools and framework, IoT manufacturers can apply advanced 3D graphics capabilities to their device’s UI, except in a much leaner package. Other frameworks, such as game engines, also cater to high-fidelity graphics, but these normally include features that are not necessary for creating GUIs on IoT devices. Since the Qt framework instead tailors its features to these IoT devices, developers can build and run the UIs on far lower hardware requirements.

“At Qualcomm Technologies, we strongly believe in building an industry ecosystem that allows manufacturers to create excellent hardware and software solutions for vertical markets using our chipsets,” says Manvinder Singh, Vice President of Strategy and Partner Solutions Development of IoT, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “This collaboration gives developers a ready-made solution to build their creative solutions on top of.”

Qt Group’s tools for designing, developing, and assuring the quality of products aim to promote closer alignment between developers and designers, streamlining workflows by letting them work simultaneously within the same framework. The tools are ideal for cross-platform development, particularly for low-powered and embedded devices.

LoRa Alliance® Unveils LoRaWAN® Development Roadmap; The Standard’s Success Guides Its Future Evolution and Direction

Continuous innovation of the robust and high-capacity LoRaWAN open standard has led to the most LPWAN deployments globally across terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs).

The LoRa Alliance®, today launched its formal roadmap, which highlights LoRaWAN’s evolution from building and interconnecting networks through its focus on making the technology faster and easier to deploy, work that has successfully made LoRaWAN the leading LPWAN with the most deployments supporting IoT’s active scaling across numerous end markets.

The roadmap also showcases the planned development of the LoRaWAN open standard for IoT communications.

“LoRaWAN is a purpose-built networking technology to support massive IoT,” said Donna Moore, CEO and chairwoman of the LoRa Alliance. “The members of the LoRa Alliance have been diligent in their work to lay the foundation strategically evolving LoRaWAN to achieve the significant scaling that is taking place in IoT. Not only is our technology best of breed and proven across multiple multimillion-sensor deployments, but it is also backed by the largest ecosystem with the greatest number and diversity of certified devices. Further, it offers the widest variety of deployment options across terrestrial networks and satellite NTNs, including hybrid networking approaches. As such, it is the only LPWAN that can address the requirements of any organization looking to deploy large-scale, low-power IoT solutions today.”

The roadmap outlines the planned enhancements of several critical features already incorporated in the LoRaWAN standard:

Expanding Addressable Markets

  • Enhances connectivity for NTN LoRaWAN through, for example, further optimization of the long range–frequency hopping spread spectrum (LR-FHSS), which enables LoRaWAN to far surpass the projected network-capacity requirements of massive IoT.
  • Make relay enhancements that increase LoRaWAN signals’ reach in noisy or physically challenging environments to allow sensors to be deployed anywhere.
  • Add fast and low-power network discovery, which offers new deployment options where coverage is not permanent, like mobile gateways, allowing walk-by or drive-by applications and adding significant value for key markets like utilities, where LoRaWAN dominates in terms of deployment volumes.

Hyperscalability

  • Simplify deployments with easier device profile management and device migration.
  • Carry GS1-compliant identifiers, such as RFIDs, barcodes, electronic product codes (EPC) over LoRaWAN, to enable devices connected via LoRaWAN to be used for product/asset identification.
  • Facilitate LoRaWAN end-device onboarding by LoRaWAN networks with automated device profile downloads, which automatically request the device profiles from online repositories using a standard API, building on prior work of LoRa Alliance QR code.

Core Network Management

  • Strengthen device interoperability by standardizing the application server and gateway interfaces.

Certification

  • Drive customer confidence through the addition of firmware updates over the air and relay to LoRaWAN certification testing, allowing end-device manufacturers to validate the performance of these features.
  • Give end users confidence in cross-vendor device interoperability by adding advanced interoperability testing into the LoRaWAN certification test suite. This testing will validate that devices from different manufacturers can effectively exchange and make use of each other’s information.

Physical/Link Layer Development

  • Introduce crypto-agility to LoRaWAN, so the variety of current and future crypto-suites can be used as add-ons with the LoRaWAN Link Layer without having to evolve the latter.

As IoT moves from millions to billions of connections, as is forecast in the next few years, network scalability is a key consideration that is addressed in the current standard and slated for future enhancements. Smart metering is one key market where LoRaWAN has established a market-leading position with the current specification delivering abundant network capacity to address market requirements. Recognizing the growth in IoT connections that will be enabled by satellite and other NTNs, the Alliance developed LR-FHSS for massive, global LoRaWAN connectivity. As part of its planned roadmap, the LoRa Alliance will continue to enhance and expand the standard based on market needs and new use cases.

One example that illustrates LoRaWAN’s existing high-capacity capability is the ZENNER network, with nearly 7.5 million sensors running on more than 100,000 gateways in 15 countries to support energy providers, the housing industry, cities and municipalities, municipal utilities and industrial operations. As this example shows, the LoRaWAN standard easily addresses today’s IoT capacity requirements.

“ZENNER has moved this proven technology to its larger-scale deployments with water, gas and electric municipalities. In the United States, ZENNER has already installed systems in seven communities this year alone. LoRaWAN technology makes an open standard system easy to install and at a lower cost for our customers. In addition, utilities can offer a mass number of other services to their customer base due to this open standard, which will enrich their customers as well as themselves. ZENNER is currently testing LoRaWAN satellite communication and how that fits into our IoT direction. To date it has shown great promise and at a reasonable cost for our customers. We are seeing an immense amount of interest in LoRaWAN that will feed the growth of our company on a global basis. The LoRa Alliance is the organization that has laid out the plan that got us here and has structured plans that take us into the future. ZENNER is a proud sponsor of the Alliance and values its other members. As a company we cannot ask for a better organization to help us in developing our IoT strategy.”
–– Rich Sanders, president, ZENNER USA, and treasurer, LoRa Alliance Board of Directors

“From its inception, the technical and performance advantages of LoRaWAN have been embraced by customers needing a comprehensive solution for deploying and managing large-scale sensor-based applications. The ongoing innovation represented in the development roadmap presented by the LoRa Alliance today continues to firmly establish the technology as a standout choice for a growing number of use cases, including those requiring enhanced or expanded connectivity delivered by relays, mobile gateways and non-terrestrial networks. For Netmore and our global customers, these advantages translate to leadership positions in service optimization, cost savings, regulatory compliance and resource conservation. This is most evident in the utility and energy sectors, where metering and infrastructure monitoring solutions are rapidly scaling, network deployment times and costs are being reduced, and compliance and ROI are being achieved faster—all while contributing positively to the planet. Netmore is a strong supporter of the LoRa Alliance and the LoRaWAN ecosystem. With LoRaWAN, Netmore is not just leading, we’re defining the market. And with our unwavering focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship, we’re not just a network operator, but a proud catalyst for a greener, more sustainable world.”
–– Ove Anebygd, CEO, Netmore Group AB, and LoRa Alliance Board Member

“It is tremendously validating to look at the future of the LoRaWAN standard and know that we are building from an exceptionally broad and solid foundation,” continued Moore.

“Time after time, our members share their real-world deployments that are successfully using LoRaWAN at scale to improve the well-being of people and the planet while running profitable enterprises. This truly exemplifies the strength, breadth and depth of the LoRaWAN standard today and the unlimited potential of LoRaWAN as we continue to evolve and enhance its features.”

ByteSnap releases IoT standards and protocols guide for World IoT Day 2024

ByteSnap IoT standards and protocols guide

The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionised the way we live and work. Fresh uses include smart water management, smart farming, micromobility, self-driving enablement and connected vehicles. With the proliferation of IoT devices, protocols and standards ensure that the devices function correctly and communicate smoothly with each other.

Award-winning embedded electronics design consultancy, ByteSnap, has extensive experience in designing and developing reliable and secure IoT devices that meet regulatory requirements and industry standards. With this in mind and to mark World IoT Day on 9 April, its engineers have put together a guide on IoT protocols and standards; why they matter, the most common ones and what to consider in the design process, and a handy technical glossary.

IoT protocols and standards; an overview

IoT protocols are guidelines, or a set of rules and standards on how devices should work, communicate and exchange data within an IoT network. They define device connectivity, interoperability, security, and privacy within IoT systems. In the context of the IoT the protocols take into account the unique requirements of IoT devices, including limited processing power, memory and energy. IoT protocols are designed to provide reliable and efficient comms between devices, minimise bandwidth use and keep power consumption low.

IoT standards, meanwhile, define the requirements for IoT devices and systems. They can cover a wide range of topics, such as security, interoperability, and data formats. IoT standards are constructed and maintained by organisations and bodies that specialise in setting technical guidelines, frameworks and best practices for IoT. Prominent organisations include the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC); Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE); Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC); Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF); Thread Group; Connectivity Standards Alliance.

Among key international standards are ISO/IEC 30141:2018; ISO/IEC 27030:2020 and ISO/IEC 21823-3:2021.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are examples of commercial IoT standards and protocols that are widely used. The commercial IoT industry is still growing, with more protocols and standards emerging to meet the demand for streamlined, user-friendly devices in the consumer electronics market.

Choosing the right IoT product design standards and protocols for your project

Common IoT communication protocols include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, LoRaWAN, and MQTT; while common IoT security standards include Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), Matter and Transport Layer Security (TLS).

Choosing the right IoT protocol or standard for a project will depend on several factors within a spec – such as the type of device, the data transfer rate, power consumption, and range requirements.

Device type: the type of device deployed plays a significant role in determining the suitable IoT protocol. If you’re working with small, low-power devices like sensors or wearables, a lightweight protocol such as MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) may be preferable as it is efficient at transmitting small packets of data over constrained networks. For complex devices, including industrial equipment or smart appliances, that require robust communication capabilities, protocols like CoAP (Constrained Application Protocol) or HTTP might be better, offering features like request-response communication and support for larger payloads.

Data transfer rates: these vary depending on the application’s needs. Projects involving real-time monitoring or control, such as smart home automation or industrial process optimisation, protocols like MQTT or CoAP are suited, because they enable low-latency communication and efficient data transmission. Applications that involve periodic data collection or infrequent updates, such as environmental monitoring or asset tracking, may see benefits using LoRaWAN or Sigfox, which prioritise long-range communication and low power consumption over high data rates.

Power consumption: is a critical consideration, particularly for battery-powered IoT devices where energy efficiency directly impacts device lifespan and maintenance costs. Lightweight protocols like MQTT and CoAP are designed to minimise power consumption by reducing the overhead associated with message formatting and transmission. Conversely, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Zigbee implement power-saving mechanisms like low-duty cycling and sleep modes to prolong battery life in devices such as wearables and smart sensors.

Range requirements: The range over which IoT devices need to communicate varies depending on the deployment environment and application scenario. For projects that require local area coverage within a confined space, protocols like BLE or Zigbee offer short-range communication suitable for home automation, smart buildings, and indoor asset tracking. Alternatively, for applications spanning larger geographical areas or outdoor environments, protocols like LoRaWAN or NB-IoT (Narrowband IoT) provide long-range connectivity capable of reaching distances of several kilometres, making them ideal for applications such as agriculture monitoring, smart city infrastructure, and remote environmental sensing.

Why standards are key to IoT product design success

IoT product design standards are significant for electronics product designers and manufacturers for several reasons. Chiefly, they ensure interoperability between devices from different manufacturers. By adhering to a common standard, devices can communicate with each other seamlessly, reducing the need for proprietary communication protocols or gateways.

IoT product design standards also help to:

    1. Ensure the security and privacy of data transmitted between devices. Standards such as the Matter standard include several security features such as encryption, authentication, and device identity. This helps to ensure that data transmitted between devices is secure and private, reducing the risk of data breaches and cyberattacks.
    2. Guarantee the reliability and scalability of IoT devices. Standards such as Zigbee or Bluetooth Mesh are designed to handle large-scale deployments of IoT devices, allowing them to communicate with each other efficiently and effectively.
    3. Reduce costs for electronics product designers and manufacturers. By adhering to a common standard, manufacturers can reduce the need for custom development and testing, reducing costs and time-to-market for new products.
    4. Drive innovation in the IoT industry. By providing a common framework for communication between devices, designers and manufacturers can focus on developing new and innovative products and services, rather than developing custom communication protocols.

The success of an IoT project hinges not only on its core concept but also on various supporting factors like hardware, software, and infrastructure. Thus, taking a holistic approach to designing an IoT system becomes paramount, considering every aspect that contributes to its launch and use.

In the realm of IoT, the choice of product design standards and protocols holds immense significance. These standards serve as a universal language for IoT devices, facilitating seamless communication between them. Moreover, adherence to these standards ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and industry norms, reduces costs and improves efficiency, all pivotal steps in bringing IoT products to market fruition.

Panasonic and Jasmy begins to create a Web3-based platform that connects personal information with IoT information

Toward providing an open platform to connect people and things (IoT)

Jasmy Incorporated and Panasonic Advanced Technology Development Co.,Ltd. have started collaborating to develop a platform that integrates information generated by individuals with information generated by things, enabling highly secure processing.

The Jasmy platform, which includes the Jasmy Personal Data Locker (hereinafter “PDL”) — an online storage-based personal information management and usage system provided by Jasmy — along with Panasonic Advanced Technology Development’s extensive IoT expertise, experience, and high technology, will drive the development of platforms applying blockchain technology and IoT synergistically.

This platform will incorporate agile development methods with Web3 technology, emphasizing speed in its development. Our goal is to release it as a platform, attracting a wide range of users across various fields. By utilizing this platform, we can create services that work well with many different things and can be used in various ways, significantly enhancing the efficiency of app and service development.

Specific details of the collaboration will be announced in the future.

Background of Collaboration

Until now, various personal information held by individuals has been owned and utilized by IT companies through internet services. PDL is a platform that not only securely stores data but also allows users to provide and share data under their own will, while maintaining security. Additionally, with the exponential increase in internet-connected devices, the functionality of each device has evolved extensively. The data generated from these diverse devices is vast and varied. Furthermore, besides requiring fast data processing and security, real-time responsiveness is also becoming increasingly important.

Furthermore, combining “information generated by people” and “information generated by things” requires a perspective beyond just data exchange. It involves building trustworthy relationships through the transfer and delegation of authority among “people and people,” “people and things,” and “things and things.” Additionally, to accelerate various service developments, there is a growing need for widely available platforms along with development environment packages (SDK) for developers. This will enable the creation of user-centric data utilization environments and new value, promoting “Data Democracy” worldwide.

Both companies share this understanding and have agreed to collaborate, combining their respective strengths and experiences to aim for the early realization of a widely used platform, leading to the agreement on this collaboration.
