8 Best Automated Compliance Platforms

Rich Lansdowne, Semtech

An exclusive article by Rich Lansdowne*, Senior Director Cloud Services at Semtech.

Imagine you’re the director of the New York Philharmonic, planning a grand symphony orchestra event. With the finest instruments and the best musicians at your disposal, you’re set for an outstanding performance. However, anyone familiar with classical music knows that without a conductor to harmonize the instruments, manage the tempo, and guide the musicians through complex scores, even the most talented ensemble could descend into disarray.

Similarly, in the ever-evolving landscape of the Internet of Things (IoT), managed service platforms are not just facilitators; they are the linchpins that enable organizations to unlock the full potential of IoT solutions. Just like a conductor in an orchestra, a managed service IoT platform harmonizes the diverse components of IoT.

These platforms ensure that every ‘instrument’—from sensors on a factory floor to smart streetlights in a city—plays in perfect harmony. They ‘conduct’ the installation, manage the ‘tempo’ of data flow, and ensure that every ‘note’ of data is secure and precisely tuned. Without this guiding hand, the potential of IoT, akin to an orchestra without a conductor, would struggle to reach its full, melodious potential.

For this reason, managed service IoT platforms are increasingly becoming the backbone of connected device ecosystems. They offer a comprehensive suite of services that support organizations throughout the entire lifecycle of IoT deployment, transforming complexity into simplicity, the unreachable into the accessible, and the overwhelming into the effortlessly manageable. In a world where efficiency and connectivity reign supreme, these platforms are the vital links that seamlessly integrate our digital existence.

Global Connectivity and Installation Support

One of the primary advantages of managed service IoT platforms is their ability to offer global connectivity solutions seamlessly. With the proliferation of IoT devices worldwide, it’s crucial for organizations to maintain a reliable and secure connection across different networks. Managed service platforms typically have agreements with multiple network providers, ensuring resilient access across various regions. With a global SIM and connectivity management platform, companies can simplify the process of connecting devices anywhere in the world, which is particularly beneficial for organizations with international operations.

Installation support is another critical service provided by good managed platforms. Deploying IoT devices can be a complex task, especially when it involves a large number of devices across multiple locations. A worthwhile managed service provider can take the lead on installation, ensuring that devices are correctly set up and integrated into existing systems, which can significantly reduce the burden on internal IT teams.

Hardware Leasing

Another aspect where managed service IoT platforms can add value is through hardware leasing options for things like Satellite Tracking and Broadband Access. This approach allows organizations to avoid the high upfront costs associated with purchasing IoT devices outright. Instead, they can opt for a subscription-based model that includes the leasing of hardware, reducing capital expenditure and providing the flexibility to scale up or down as needed.

Device and Data Management

Effective device and data management are at the heart of any successful IoT strategy. Managed service platforms offer tools and services that allow organizations to monitor and control their IoT devices remotely. This includes updating firmware, managing device configurations, and troubleshooting issues without the need for on-site visits, which can be both time-consuming and costly.

Data management is equally important, as some IoT devices generate vast amounts of data that need to be collected, processed, and analyzed, while others just send a few crucial bytes. Managed service IoT platforms often come with built-in data management and analytics tools, enabling organizations to gain insights into their operations and make data-driven decisions, often saving them both money and time.

Addressing Market Challenges

Like all markets, the IoT market is not without its challenges. From the complexity of managing a diverse array of devices, to security concerns, and the need for specialized skills to handle IoT deployments. Managed service IoT platforms address these challenges by providing a unified solution that simplifies management, enhances security with end-to-end encryption protocols like LWM2M (Lightweight M2M), and offers access to expertise in IoT technology.
For instance, the implementation of the LWM2M protocol in a managed service platform would provide a secure solution by encrypting data from the device to the application. This standard protocol ensures that sensitive information remains protected, addressing one of the key concerns in IoT deployments.

Managed Services Are Pivotal to IoT

In the ever-evolving landscape of Internet of Things (IoT), managed service platforms are not just facilitators; they are the linchpins that enable organizations to unlock the full potential of IoT solutions. By offering a comprehensive suite of services, from global connectivity to intricate device and data management, these platforms are instrumental in overcoming the challenges inherent in IoT deployment.

When exploring managed IoT platforms, it’s crucial to consider those that are pioneering in the integration of protocols like LoRaWAN. Equally important is the recognition of technologies like LoRa Sensors for their unique ability to enable long-range data transmissions with amazing battery life. This capability is a game-changer in IoT, expanding the horizons of data communication and device interoperability.

LoRa’s significance in IoT is not just about its technical prowess but also about the doors it opens for innovative applications. From urban to rural, industrial to consumer spaces, the implications of long-range, low-power IoT solutions are vast and varied. This technology brings a new dimension to IoT, allowing for solutions that were previously inconceivable due to range and power limitations.

As we continue to navigate the complex world of IoT, it’s important to acknowledge the role of managed service platforms and technologies like LoRa in shaping the future of connectivity. They embody the spirit of innovation and progress, driving us towards smarter, more efficient, and more connected solutions. The journey of IoT is one of continuous exploration and growth, and these technologies are at the forefront, leading the way in transforming how we interact with the world around us.

In this dynamic environment, the true power of IoT lies in its ability to adapt, evolve, and integrate technologies that push the boundaries of what’s possible. Semtech and Kairos Implement Leak Detection Systems to Preserve Historic Ghirardelli Square Building

LoRa®-based sensors and gateways using the LoRaWAN® standard protect San Francisco’s iconic Ghirardelli Square with real-time monitoring for leak detection.

Semtech Corporation along with Kairos, an innovator in operational risk management solutions for commercial and residential properties, announce their collaboration to enhance water monitoring and leak protection at the renowned Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco.

Kairos’ leak detection strip sensors and gateways based on Semtech’s LoRa® technology operate on a LoRaWAN® network and connect to the cloud to enable real-time monitoring. If any water leaks are detected, these LoRa-enabled sensors send an instantaneous alert to facilities management so that any potential damage to the property can be greatly reduced or eliminated with quick action.

Semtech’s LoRa technology continues to be the de facto LPWAN wireless platform of Internet of Things (IoT) devices with more than 300 million LoRa end nodes deployed across the globe. Semtech’s LoRa chipsets connect sensors to the cloud and enable real-time communication of data and analytics. This prompt management helps to enhance the efficiency and productivity of sustainable IoT use cases such as agriculture, industrial, transportation, and more.

Largely considered to be the country’s first successful real estate adaptive reuse project, Ghirardelli Square is a remarkable blend of rich history and contemporary infrastructure. Integrating state-of-the-art leak protection systems without disrupting the tenant and customer experience, or critical infrastructure, is a typical challenge that acquirers and restoration teams encounter across the United States. Putting modern, non-intrusive facility management systems at the heart of all risk mitigation efforts is critical to preserving these iconic assets.

“The United States spends upwards of one billion dollars annually on restoration projects, promoting economic, environmental, and educational benefits for businesses and consumers,” said Tom Mueller, executive vice president and general manager, IoT System Products Group at Semtech Corporation.

“As we modernize and preserve more historical locations, we must use minimally invasive, low-power and long-range risk mitigation solutions that do not disrupt the cultural experience. From water leaks to smoke detection, to air quality, to power management, and more, LoRa is the answer. And, in the case of Ghirardelli Square, who doesn’t like a wonderful piece of chocolate?”

Previously, rainfall led to water intrusion into one of the main switchgear rooms at Ghirardelli Square, resulting in temporary interruptions for the building and neighboring businesses. With the application of Noah Multifunction Leak Sensors, based on LoRa technology and running on a LoRaWAN network, the site team addressed this challenge comprehensively. The patented asset protection system detected multiple leaks within the first month itself, successfully preventing substantial damage.

“Having built a real estate home service business and witnessed the aftermath of over 3,000 water damage incidents made me realize the size of this problem that plagues about 14,000 homes a day in the US,” said Dean Fung-A-Wing, chief executive officer and Founder of Kairos.

“Water detection systems for commercial and multifamily properties must be affordable, require minimal maintenance, and consume little energy to provide a good return on investment and environmental benefits.”

“With Semtech’s LoRa technology, our discrete Kairos sensor solutions significantly impact even the most challenging real estate assets. Our sensors install in seconds while providing data, coverage, and protection for up to 10 years.”

Today, the historic chocolate factory is a specialty retail and dining complex.

Semtech Corporation, a high-performance semiconductor, IoT systems and Cloud connectivity service provider, announces that Sustainable Hrvest Sdn Bhd (SH) has deployed LoRa-enabled sensors and LoRaWAN-based gateways across its Durian fruit farms in greater Malaysia.

While one of the country’s most popular fruits, Durian trees are challenging to grow and harvest. These plants are sensitive to weather and moisture conditions and need 24X7 maintenance for high yield. LoRa-enabled sensors now give Malaysian farmers real-time data on the health of their farms every step of the growth cycle from pre-harvest, harvest, until post-harvest. This real-time visibility has made farmers’ lives easier, while also helping improve their bottom line.

LoRa is the de facto wireless platform of Internet of Things (IoT). Semtech’s LoRa chipsets connect sensors to the Cloud and enable real-time communication of data and analytics. This instantaneous management helps to enhance the efficiency and productivity of sustainable IoT use cases. Globally, there are more than 300 million LoRa end nodes deployed across a wide array of customer applications from agriculture and healthcare to industrial and transportation, and more.

“We founded this company to address the farming barriers and pain points here in Malaysia. To better serve our community, we knew that we needed to improve farming practices, reduce operational costs, and help farmers deliver better yields,” said Han Wei, co-founder, and chief technology officer at SH. “LoRa was an easy choice for our team. One of our biggest farms, Musang Valley Plantation, is more than 700 acres with 11,000 Durian trees. The land includes many steep hillsides which make managing the crops challenging.”

“LoRa monitors the trees, alerts the farmer if there is an issue, and allows them to take immediate action. This response saves not only time, but also mitigates potential tree loss and revenue. Sustainable IoT and LoRa have completely overhauled farming in Malaysia.”

Currently, there are 30 LoRa-powered farms in Malaysia with new plantations expected to go live in the coming 12 months. Designed by Sustainable Hrvest, the IoT nodes utilizing LoRaWAN implement LoRa’s low power, long range sensors and last upwards of four years in the field without needing replacement. This purpose-built chip-to-Cloud sensor platform monitors the flow rate and pressure of irrigation systems to maintain soil moisture levels. It also tracks the nutrients in the soil. The data-driven farming practice gives Malaysian farmers the ability to remotely care for their crops and helps to deliver a more sustainable planet for future generations.

Semtech’s LoRa® Devices Featured in Kiwi Technology Gas Metering Solution

Kiwi Technology’s Network Control Unit uses LoRaWAN® to connect and monitor gas meters in real time and potentially reduce gas leaks.

Semtech Corporation, announced that Kiwi Technology, an advanced Internet of Things (IoT) turn-key solutions and data analytics provider, is using Semtech’s LoRa® devices for its new third party class B Network Control Unit (NCU) that connects gas meters via the LoRaWAN® standard.

Due to low power consumption and bidirectional communication capabilities of LoRa, the NCUs are fully autonomous for up to 10 years.

The recently deployed NCUs remotely read indoor and outdoor gas meters and communicate data to a top tier Japanese gas utility company. Prior to the deployment and infrastructure upgrade by Kiwi Technology, this utility provider had only one measurement data point each month, obtained from a manual field process. The new NCU system and Kiwi Technology’s comprehensive gateway products utilizing LoRaWAN enable multiple, remote meter reads per day and allows customers access to their real-time and historical gas consumption trends to identify cost savings and waste reduction opportunities.

Kiwi Technology’s end-to-end smart gas solutions with wireless communication with LoRaWAN connectivity also ensure gas supply and infrastructure safety. The solution helps to quickly detect and send alerts about potential methane leaks, equipment malfunctions or breakdowns. The NCU anticipates and remotely shuts off gas in potentially dangerous situations before a failure or automatically when a hazard, such as a typhoon or earthquake, occurs.

“Choosing Semtech’s LoRa devices for building our IoT-enabled solution allowed us to create an innovative and advanced gas meter reading and monitoring system and deploy it using a carrier-grade network infrastructure,” said Judy Lee, chairperson of Kiwi Technology.

“With the digitization of utilities and municipalities, we are helping utility companies optimize their gas distribution while reducing harmful CO2 gas emissions exactly at the location where gas is consumed. This contributes to a more efficient and safer use of energy resources.”

“Utility providers that have deployed smart metering solutions are seeing a rapid reduction of waste and substantial improvements in operational efficiencies,” said Marc Pégulu, vice president and general manager for Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Group. “The use of LoRa and LoRaWAN, as shown with Kiwi Technology’s NCU solution, showcases the power of IoT technologies to help gas utilities improve safety and achieve ESG goals while creating a smarter and safer planet for all.”
