IoT Partner Programs Expand to Form Stronger Alliances to Combat Complexity of an Expanding IoT Supplier Ecosystem

In its recent analysis ranking more than 450 companies on their IoT service capabilities, ABI Research finds that IoT partner programs and their member companies are evolving their IoT offerings, with 54% of listed organizations receiving a high IoT maturity grade.

IoT partner programs are ecosystems of companies focused on assembling end-to-end solutions around a supplier product portfolio. The programs streamline the IoT adoption process by enabling collaboration among hardware, software, and service providers across different technology sectors to deliver comprehensive IoT solutions for enterprises.

“IoT partner programs are critical, as supplier diversity and offer complexity is not lessening and no one company can deliver a complete end-to-end IoT solution,” says Ryan Harbison, Research Analyst at ABI Research. “Over the past year, companies like Dell and Intel continued to grow their programs to target additional verticals like manufacturing and energy. IoT partner programs ‘un-fragment’ the market for end-users and drive awareness to hardware, software and service providers that combined can deliver an end-to-end IoT solution.”

Dell is expanding its partner program ecosystem with its series of IoT gateways, relying on partners like Action Point and Datatrend Technologies. Through a portal, Dell customers can search for the partners that will best fit their needs, based on a variety of metrics like vertical offerings and location. The initial program success is so strong that Dell aims to double its program members by the end of 2016.

Similarly, Intel’s IoT Solution Alliance continues to create interoperable, secure solutions to drive efficiencies and deliver device system performance insights. Program members like Advantech and relayr help Intel differentiate its devices and the value they provide to end users.

Partner programs drive value for parent organizations, like Dell and Intel, by expanding their ecosystem user base through their member company connections. The programs, in turn, drive value for member companies through incremental business opportunities. Finally, enterprises acquiring IoT capabilities enjoy faster time to market and potentially a more integrated solution.

“Today’s successful partner programs are the ones striking the right balance between their number of partners and the overall product offering,” concludes Harbison.

“It is not about having the biggest partner program; it is about working to forge new alliances with like-minded partners across multiple sectors and consistently delivering valuable IoT services to a broad range of customers. It is about learning how to adapt in the expanding IoT universe.”

IBM and ARM Collaborate to Accelerate Delivery of Internet of Things

IBM Cloud IoT Platform to Deliver New Device Management, Risk Management and Analytics Capabilities; New IoT Service for Electronics.

IBM today announced an expansion of its Internet of Things (IoT) platform – called IBM IoT Foundation – through an integration with ARM, providing out of the box connectivity with ARM® mbed™-enabled devices to analytics services. This fusion will allow huge quantities of data from devices such as industrial appliances, weather sensors and wearable monitoring devices to be gathered, analyzed and acted upon.

IBM also announced the first in a series of IBM Cloud-based, industry-specific IoT services with IoT for Electronics. The service will enable electronics manufacturers to gather data from individual sensors that can be combined with other data for real-time analysis.

The IBM IoT Foundation is a platform upon which a family of fully managed, cloud-hosted offerings on the SoftLayer Infrastructure is built. IoT Foundation makes it simple to derive value from Internet of Things (IoT) devices. It includes:

  • Analytics tools capable of dealing with large quantities of fast-moving data,
  • Access to IBM Bluemix, IBM’s Platform-as-a-Service, that is capable of handling the immense flow of data and provide anytime access for decision makers; and
  • Security systems capable of helping organizations protect IoT data as rigorously as they do their own confidential financial, IP and strategy information.

“Deploying IoT technology has to be easy, secure and scalable for it to feel like a natural extension of a company’s business,” said Krisztian Flautner, General Manager, IoT Business, ARM.

“By collaborating with IBM, we will deliver the first unified chip-to-cloud, enterprise-class IoT platform. This will empower companies of any size with a productivity tool that can readily transform how they operate, and the services they can offer.”

The integration between IBM and ARM will allow products powered by ARM mbed-enabled chips to automatically register with the IBM IoT Foundation, and connect with IBM analytics services. This unifies the ARM mbed IoT Device Platform and the IBM IoT Foundation at the point where information gathered from deployed sensors in any connected device is delivered to the cloud for analysis. The IoT connection also enables delivery of actionable events to control equipment or provide users with alerts or other information. For example, the triggering of an alarm message on a washing machine to ask the owner to confirm a breakdown engineer appointment if a fault is detected.

This integration can help clients improve engagement, accelerate innovation and enhance operations through connected devices and analysis of the data. Custom hardware built around ARM’s flexible and efficient chip technology and IBM’s leading IoT services for predictive maintenance, better asset performance, operational risk management and managed continuous engineering, can help provide organizations with enterprise-grade tools designed to help them build value from their IoT devices. Original design manufacturers and OEMs – such as Ionics – are already seeing value in the IBM and ARM integration as it assimilates the IBM IoT Foundation at the chip architecture level.

“We’re excited to work with IBM because we believe that an effective IoT solution should be built from the ground up – from chipset through services – and is by far the best choice to have a complete end-to-end solution,” said Earl Qua, Vice President of Ionics. “Working with IBM we have tapped into our respective company’s expertise to create a platform that is built and customized for the unique nature in which companies are utilizing IoT.”

Electronics manufacturers are already adopting IBM’s cloud services to connect everything from dishwashers to Smart TVs to pro audio equipment:

  • “By using IBM IoT services, we are able to real-time manage and control Smart TV content in over 30 countries. This provides us the opportunity to continuously balance costs with increased customer experience. Lastly, we have eliminated the need to set up hardware within traditional IT infrastructure – allowing a drastic reduction in provisioning time.” – Marc Harmsen – Global Marketing Lead and Product Manager EMEA Philips Television at TP Vision.
  • “At Gibson Innovations, design and quality lead the way. IBM’s service capabilities – leveraging cloud, IoT and analytics – allow us to provide unique user experiences for connected devices. Additionally, the advanced analytics enables the development of new applications and services as well as device management and monitoring in a security-rich infrastructure. This is extremely valuable in maintaining and increasing loyalty among our customers,” said Henry Chiarelli, Executive Vice President of Gibson Brands.

“Since 2008, IBM has helped thousands of customers embrace the Internet of Things – to help cities become smarter, hospitals to transform patient care and financial institutions to improve risk management,” said Pat Toole, General Manager, Internet of Things, IBM. “The IoT is now at an inflection point and it needs the big data expertise of IBM and little data expertise of ARM to ensure it reaches its global potential.”

Aeris® and Tech Mahindra Jumpstart IoT Program Offers Mobile Operators a Clear Path to Profit from the Growing Internet of Things Opportunity

Joint solution addresses the technology, expertise, and go-to-market considerations necessary for a successful IoT strategy.

Aeris, the Made for Machines™ technology and service provider, and Tech Mahindra, a specialist in digital transformation, consulting and business re-engineering, announced today its Jumpstart IoT service solution that provides the blueprint for mobile operators to build a scalable and profitable Internet of Things (IoT) business.

According to the Machina Research M2M Forecast Database, global M2M and IoT services spend is expected to reach $126B USD in 2015, with a 23.5% CAGR through 2020. By working with Aeris and Tech Mahindra, operators can service a wider customer base and increase their share of enterprise M2M and IoT spend by as much as 300% over connectivity services alone. Jumpstart IoT expands operator service offerings to include packaged applications in key vertical solutions including fleet, asset tracking, insurance, and others. Additionally, Jumpstart IoT technologies vault operators into a leading position in managed data services for the IoT, lowering the bar for application developers and enabling IoT data monetizing.

“This year Internet of Things will be at the top of most carriers’ agendas; and if it’s not, it should be,” notes Matt Hatton, founder and CEO of Machina Research.
“Many will expedite their plans to tap into the growing IoT opportunity, and they need a well-considered approach to coherently and profitably addressing the market. In particular IoT, compared to M2M, requires mobile network operators (MNOs) to tackle a broader range of issues including more complex regulation and issues associated with data management.”

For many MNOs, a machine services overlay, whether built in-house, acquired from an external software provider, or a hybrid approach, constituted an operator’s M2M or IoT strategy. But this did not go far enough to ensure success.

The Jumpstart IoT solution addresses the following key success elements:

  • Locally deployed technology platform for delivering managed device connectivity services
  • A wide range of field tested vertical applications, optimized for the operator’s market
  • Specialized system operations and support services
  • Go-to-market planning support services
  • Internet-scale device data and analytics services infrastructure

“We are excited to take part of this innovative program,” said Dr. Rishi Bhatnagar, global head of digital enterprise services at Tech Mahindra.
“Jumpstart IoT is representative of Tech Mahindra’s distinct shift to providing services with our ‘Horizon Digital’ framework of analytics-led, cloud-enabled digital solutions. Through initiatives such as this, Tech Mahindra is helping mobile operators around the world and enterprise customers across a wide range of vertical segments to maximize their opportunity of the Internet of Things.”

“Noting the distinct shift from silos to services like Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Workspace as a Service (WaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) are critical building blocks of Tech Mahindra’s Digital Transformation Strategy,” continued Dr. Bhatnagar.
“By transitioning from Internet of Things to Intelligence of Things, Tech Mahindra’s Digital Services aim to provide an opportunity for telecommunications service provider to reinvent themselves.”

Dan McBride, head of operator marketing at Aeris, said:

“The role of mobile operators in the Internet-of-Things era is clear. Not only will they continue to supply connectivity services, but they are also becoming a focal point for the access, use and billing of M2M / IoT applications. Additionally, MNOs will be the repositories and distributors of data from the IoT, providing secure, controlled data access services that will fuel explosive IoT growth. Through Jumpstart IoT Aeris and Tech Mahindra are helping operators launch profitable M2M services today and sow the seeds for this future marketplace.”

The partnership with Tech Mahindra highlights Aeris’ technology value proposition, which breaks through the cost barrier for in-country system deployments. As device and customer data sovereignty becomes increasingly important, Aeris GSP makes it possible for all device, customer, and billing data to remain in the operator’s home country, keeping delivery costs low and reducing regulatory concerns. Additionally, by utilizing big data and data sharing, the Aeris cloud-based data management service, AerCloud, will allow operators to grow revenue beyond simple connected services.

Aeris will be at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain from March 2-6. Go to the web page aeris.com/meet-us to request a meeting with Aeris representatives at the event.
