The ITS market for electric buses in Europe and North America to reach € 355 million by 2027

Berg Insight today released new findings about the market for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) for electric buses.

The market value for electric bus ITS deployed in European public transport operations was € 57.1 million in 2022. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 39 percent, this number is expected to reach € 297.2 million by 2027. The North American market for electric bus ITS is similarly forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 30 percent from € 15.5 million in 2022 to reach € 58.2 million in 2027.

Berg Insight is of the opinion that the market for ITS solutions for electric buses is in a growth phase which will last for several years to come. Mega-challenges such as urbanisation, climate change and traffic congestion continue to encourage investments in electric buses and ITS, contributing to a positive outlook for the market.

Some ITS players offer complete turnkey solutions including functionality for most of the ITS applications for electric buses utilised by public transport operators, but many vendors on the market are also specialised ITS players focusing on a few sub-systems. Major international ITS players such as INIT, IVU, Clever Devices and Trapeze can provide turnkey solutions, including solutions for electric buses. ITS providers are beginning to see larger scale implementations of electric bus fleets after several years of mostly pilot projects with only a few vehicles each.

One of the leading telematics providers in Europe and North America for electric buses is ChargePoint, following its acquisition of Dutch ViriCiti in 2021. ChargePoint has increased its footprint in the fleet segment significantly and added both hardware and software solutions for the management of buses to its portfolio of charging station hardware, software and services. Other important vendors serving public transport companies with different types of solutions include the French group EQUANS through the subsidiary Ineo Systrans, as well as the Scandinavian companies Consat Telematics, FARA and Saga Tenix. The Canadian company GIRO is an important player in the scheduling and planning segment, while PSI Transcom is a prominent provider of depot and charging management software in Europe.

“Implementations of electric bus fleets are really starting to take off and there are already several cities in Europe with fleets operating over 100 electric buses”, said Caspar Jansson, IoT Analyst, Berg Insight.

chart: market value of public transport ITS for electric buses EU+NAM 2022-2027

The integration of electric buses and charging stations increases the need for ITS solutions connecting all the necessary infrastructure including electric buses, charging stations and depots. Many operators and agencies start by investing in a basic monitoring solution, but as the bus fleets go from pilot projects to larger deployments, the actors need to complement with additional subsystems for dispatching, scheduling, charging station management and depot management.

Mr. Jansson concluded:

“Operators face greater complexity with large electric vehicle fleets. Optimizing routes and supplying the required energy at the right time to the right vehicle is significantly easier with a modern ITS solution for electrified fleets.”

Tele2 IoT enables electric vehicle wireless charging on the move through a new agreement with Elonroad

Tele2 IoT is taking a step forward in the field of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and towards a sustainable automotive industry by providing connection of equipment to Elonroad, which has developed technology for electric roads where electric vehicles can be charged while driving.

Elonroad, a startup based in Lund, Sweden, has developed a solution in the form of an electric road where all kinds of electric vehicles – cars, buses, and trucks – regardless of manufacturer, can be charged while they are driving.

With more and more electric vehicles on the roads, charging while driving will reduce bottlenecks and also enable smaller batteries.

The solution consists of a rail that is integrated with the road by being installed directly on the asphalt. The rails can withstand all weather conditions and short rail segments are driven individually, which provides a high level of safety.

Karin Ebbinghaus, CEO of Elonroad, says:

“Our smart electric road needs to be connected to the internet in order for us to be able to control, optimize, and collect payments from users. The agreement with Tele2 is business-critical for us on our continued journey.”

Through 2CONTROL, Tele2 IoT’s platform for managing connected devices, Elonroad will be able to monitor and manage its IoT subscriptions. Elonroad’s service includes an integrated control system for individual measurement of each vehicle’s usage and can also analyze road conditions, such as where there are potential hazards, which can then be communicated to prevent accidents.

“Elonroad is an exciting startup with a solution that will be critical to achieve the goal of a fossil-independent vehicle fleet by 2030. By making 5G available, we secure Elonroad’s digital solution and ensure a reliable connection. As soon as 5G becomes available where Elonroad builds its electric roads, larger amounts of data that require low latency can e handled, such as the transfer of data from cameras. We are very proud to be a part of Elonroad’s continued journey”, says Stefan Trampus, EVP B2B at Tele2.

The ITS market for electric buses in Europe and North America to reach € 75 million by 2024

Berg Insight today released new findings about the market for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) for electric buses.

The market value for electric bus ITS deployed in public transport operations in Europe was € 12.7 million in 2019.
Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 37.5 percent, this number is expected to reach € 62.4 million by 2024. The North American market for electric bus ITS is similarly forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 34.2 percent from € 2.7 million in 2019 to reach € 11.8 million in 2024.

Major international ITS players such as INIT, IVU, Clever Devices and Trapeze can provide turnkey solutions. INIT and IVU have customers mainly in Europe, while Clever Devices and Trapeze are in an early phase. The latter is expected to have the first deployment in early 2021. ENGIE Solutions has installed the CAD/AVL system Navineo on electric buses in France and can provide charging solutions for buses as part of the Charge&Go-solution. One of the leading telematics providers in Europe and North America for electric buses is ViriCiti, offering hardware and software for the management of buses and charging stations. Other important vendors serving public transport companies with different types of solutions include the Scandinavian companies Consat Telematics, FARA and Sagasystem. The Canadian company GIRO is an important player in the scheduling and planning segment, while PSI Transcom is a prominent provider of depot and charging management software in Europe.

“The market for ITS solutions for electric buses is expected to grow significantly in the coming years”, said Adam Bjorkman, IoT Analyst, Berg Insight.

Mr. Bjorkman concluded:

“Many European countries have moved from the pilot stage in the last years, and ITS solutions will have a crucial role when the fleets become larger.”

Industry Challenges

Electric cars effectively save energy and facilitate travel, but they also face a series of challenges, the core of which being the performance, cost and safety of power batteries. The power battery heats up when it’s working, which is normally controllable. However, when the temperature of the battery or the charging voltage is too high, chemical reactions will occur within the battery one after another, resulting in a chain reaction that will cause the internal pressure and temperature of the battery to rise sharply, which will then lead to thermal runaway of the battery that will cause explosion or combustion.

In recent years, there have been numerous reports of fire caused by EV charging. According to the Ministry of Emergency Management, 233 people have died from e-bike fires across the country since 2013, including 34 big fires that caused fatalities and 142 deaths. Recently, a fire caused by electromobile battery charging resulted in a floor fire and killed a courier who rented the house in Rihui Xincun in Xuhui District, Shanghai. The fire department sent 10 fire engines and 65 firefighters to put out the fire at the site. Improving the safety of EV charging to reduce accidents and casualties is a major problem for EV.

SIMCom SIM7600CE Battery Management System Solution

The Battery Management System (BMS) has become an crucial link between the automotive power battery and the electric vehicle. On the one hand, BMS detects, collects and preliminarily calculates the real-time status parameters of the battery, and controls the on-off of the power supply circuit according to the comparison between the detected value and the permitted value. On the other hand, it reports the key data collected to the vehicle controller, and receives instructions from the controller to coordinate with other systems on the vehicle. BMS enables the analysis of battery status, battery safety protection, energy control and management, battery information management, etc. BMS for electric vehicles can’t collect data without data transmission of the modules. The BMS solution equipped with SIMCom SIM7600CE modules effectively improves the battery performance. Its GPS function improves the safety of EV charging and facilitates EV management.

SIMCom SIM7600CE is a Cat.4 module with excellent performance. Each component in the module is constantly optimized to ensure that the antenna has a large enough receiving area to receive signals, avoid inaccurate GPS positioning, erratic trajectory on the map and imprecise positioning due to incomplete signal reception. Meanwhile, it ensures RF performance, stability of conductivity to enable rapid networking of the system. For the takeout industry, accurate vehicle positioning can help the management team to continuously optimize routes and improve delivery efficiency. Improving battery safety and terminating the charging process in time when abnormity is detected can effectively improve the safety of EV charging and reduce accident rate.

The BMS with SIM7600CE has the following features.

  • 01.Accurate estimation of the charge state of the power battery pack : The BMS accurately estimates the remaining battery charge of the power battery pack to ensure that the SOC is maintained within a reasonable range and thus prevent damage to the battery due to overcharging or overdischarge.
  • 02.Dynamic monitoring of the operating status of the power battery pack : In the process of battery charging and discharging, the terminal voltage, temperature charge and discharge and total pack voltage of each battery in the power battery pack are collected in real time to prevent over-charging or over-discharging of the battery. Meanwhile, it can show the battery condition in time and select the defective battery to maintain the reliability and high efficiency of the whole battery pack.
  • 03.Logging of vehicle tracks : BMS solution with SIMCom SIM7600CE module with GPS positioning function facilitates rider positioning for takeout or delivery industry and keeps driving record online.
  • 04.Creating a Battery Profile : Battery usage history files provide information for further optimization and development of new types of electricity, chargers, motors, etc., and provide a basis for offline analysis of system failures.
