Behavioural change startup tackles shipping’s CO2 emissions with IoT ship data

Seafarers on IoT-enabled vessels will be ‘nudged’ to make sustainable operational decisions in new partnership.

Today, behavioural change startup Signol launches a first-of-its kind project with Stolt Tankers to further reduce shipping emissions by using IoT data to help seafarers understand the impact of their actions on overall fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and motivate them to adopt new behaviours.

By combining sensor data with behavioural change techniques, Stolt Tankers is pioneering a human-centered, tech-enabled approach to improving fuel efficiency and reduce shipping’s environmental impact.

The six-month pilot project will run on seven vessels, using Signol’s data-led service to engage seafarers and motivate them to reduce fuel consumption.

Five of the vessels use continuous monitoring (IoT) data through sensors connected directly into the ship’s power management and automation systems, providing a comprehensive and real-time view of what the crew experiences onboard.

Monitoring data will be used to create fair, achievable behavioural goals linked to three actions carried out on the ships: main and auxiliary engine performance and trim optimisation.

By using real-time IoT data as opposed to static snapshots of a ship’s status (e.g. noon reports), Stolt Tankers and Signol can enable crew and shoreside teams to make more proactive and immediate decisions, leading to improved operational efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, and enhanced safety..

IoT data includes a wider range of data points than noon reports and so provides better insights on the factors affecting whether or not crew members can implement emissions-reducing behaviours.

This depth of insights will help seafarers understand the impact of their actions on overall fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and provide tools that the Stolt Tankers management team can use to encourage and highlight their crew’s sustainability efforts.

Harriet Johnson, Head of Maritime at Signol says:

“Seafarers are frequently making high-consequence decisions with multiple priorities to consider. Their role needs to be recognised, and the complexities involved in each of these decisions must not only be respected but also aided in a sustainable and positive manner.”

Stolt Tankers’ partnership with Signol supports its continuous improvement programme and sustainability ambition to become a carbon-neutral business by 2050.

Maren Schroeder, Managing Director of Stolt Tankers, says: “For every goal achieved through the system we commit to planting three mangrove saplings at the Stolt Tankers Mangrove Forest in the JBLFMU Ecological Park, the Philippines. Not only will this initiative help us to reach our sustainability ambitions, but it also helps to protect the local ecosystem close to where many of our crews call home..”

Signol’s proven track record consistently shows fuel savings exceeding 5% in the maritime sector, delivering a return on investment in the months after launch without requiring additional capital investment. This model aligns with the needs of shipping companies’ fleet performance and fuel managers who are looking for an effective solution that delivers data-driven insights, measurable results, and a good return on investment.

The installed base of fleet management systems in South Africa to reach 3.8 million units by 2027

According to a new research report from the leading IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the number of active fleet management systems deployed in commercial vehicle fleets in South Africa reached an estimated 2.1 million in Q4-2022.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.2 percent, this number is expected to reach 3.8 million by 2027.

South Africa is a relatively mature telematics market and the penetration rate is comparably high from an international perspective. Far from all deployments are however full-scale advanced fleet management solutions. A notable share of the installed fleet telematics systems on the South African market is represented by comparably low-end tracking systems, e.g. light FM solutions, including SVR systems extended with basic FM features.

The South African fleet management market is clearly dominated by five domestic players with broad telematics portfolios that together represent 70 percent of the total number of fleet management systems in use in the country.

Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight, said:

“Berg Insight ranks Cartrack, Tracker and MiX Telematics as the largest providers of fleet management solutions in South Africa.”

He adds that Cartrack alone has more than half a million active FM units in the country.

“The remaining top-5 players are Ctrack and Netstar”, continued Mr. Andersson.

chart: installed base of active fleet management units in south africa 2022-2027

Other top-10 players on the South African fleet management market include local providers such as Bidtrack (Bidvest Group), Digicell and GPS Tracking Solutions (Eqstra Fleet Management), as well as international players including Webfleet (Bridgestone) and Gurtam. Lytx, Autotrak, Digital Matter, Scania and Powerfleet (Pointer SA) are additional top-15 providers, all having estimated installed bases of at least 15,000 fleet management units in the country. Players just outside of the top list include Key Telematics/Radius Payment Solutions, Geotab, Mtrack (Electronic Tracking Systems), iCAM Video Telematics, FleetCam and Globaltrack.

“In addition to Scania, comparably large installed bases of OEM fleet telematics systems in South Africa have also been achieved by manufacturers such as Daimler Truck, UD Trucks and Volvo Trucks”, concluded Mr. Andersson.

The new study also includes an outlook on the overall African market. Africa is clearly a highly diverse geographic region from a fleet management perspective. The continent can in general be divided into three subregions – South Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) and Northern Africa. The South African fleet telematics market is far ahead of the rest of the continent in terms of adoption, whereas Sub-Saharan Africa is the least developed region if excluding South Africa. Northern Africa is comparably advanced and well ahead of Sub-Saharan Africa when it comes to fleet telematics penetration, though still quite a bit behind South Africa.

The African fleet management market beyond South Africa is by many industry representatives described as challenging. The weak economic conditions and foreign exchange rate fluctuations in combination with the unstable political climate make the Rest of Africa market a challenging business environment overall. There are however promising prospects for players adapting to the local market dynamics as the Rest of Africa market has considerably more untapped opportunity than what South Africa can offer at this stage.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 39 percent, this number is expected to reach € 297.2 million by 2027. The North American market for electric bus ITS is similarly forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 30 percent from € 15.5 million in 2022 to reach € 58.2 million in 2027.

Berg Insight is of the opinion that the market for ITS solutions for electric buses is in a growth phase which will last for several years to come. Mega-challenges such as urbanisation, climate change and traffic congestion continue to encourage investments in electric buses and ITS, contributing to a positive outlook for the market.

Some ITS players offer complete turnkey solutions including functionality for most of the ITS applications for electric buses utilised by public transport operators, but many vendors on the market are also specialised ITS players focusing on a few sub-systems. Major international ITS players such as INIT, IVU, Clever Devices and Trapeze can provide turnkey solutions, including solutions for electric buses. ITS providers are beginning to see larger scale implementations of electric bus fleets after several years of mostly pilot projects with only a few vehicles each.

One of the leading telematics providers in Europe and North America for electric buses is ChargePoint, following its acquisition of Dutch ViriCiti in 2021. ChargePoint has increased its footprint in the fleet segment significantly and added both hardware and software solutions for the management of buses to its portfolio of charging station hardware, software and services. Other important vendors serving public transport companies with different types of solutions include the French group EQUANS through the subsidiary Ineo Systrans, as well as the Scandinavian companies Consat Telematics, FARA and Saga Tenix. The Canadian company GIRO is an important player in the scheduling and planning segment, while PSI Transcom is a prominent provider of depot and charging management software in Europe.

“Implementations of electric bus fleets are really starting to take off and there are already several cities in Europe with fleets operating over 100 electric buses”, said Caspar Jansson, IoT Analyst, Berg Insight.

chart: market value of public transport ITS for electric buses EU+NAM 2022-2027

The integration of electric buses and charging stations increases the need for ITS solutions connecting all the necessary infrastructure including electric buses, charging stations and depots. Many operators and agencies start by investing in a basic monitoring solution, but as the bus fleets go from pilot projects to larger deployments, the actors need to complement with additional subsystems for dispatching, scheduling, charging station management and depot management.

Mr. Jansson concluded:

“Operators face greater complexity with large electric vehicle fleets. Optimizing routes and supplying the required energy at the right time to the right vehicle is significantly easier with a modern ITS solution for electrified fleets.”

Carsharing on the rise but performance varies among regional markets

According to a new research report by IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the number of users of carsharing services worldwide is forecasted to grow from 86.0 million people in 2021 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.1 percent to reach 224.3 million people in 2026.

Berg Insight forecasts that the number of vehicles used for carsharing services will grow at a CAGR of 12.5 percent from 539,000 at the end of 2021 to 973,000 at the end of 2026. The carsharing fleet grew 2.2 percent worldwide in 2021 and performance varied on regional level.

Martin Cederqvist, IoT analyst at Berg Insight, said:

“While the Covid-19 pandemic has created challenges for carsharing operators in China, the European market continues to show good uptake and grew 21 percent in terms of fleet size in 2021.”

The South American and Middle Eastern markets have grown rapidly in the past year. The North American market has struggled in recent years, but partly recovered in 2021 when the total fleet size increased by 16.2 precent while membership decreased by 4.3 percent.

CarSharing Organisations (CSOs) offer members access to a fleet of shared cars 24/7 from unattended self-service locations. Usage is billed by the minute/hour and by distance driven, with rates that include fuel, insurance and maintenance. Today, most CSOs use station-based networks with roundtrip rental. This operational model requires members to return a vehicle to the same designated station from which it was accessed.

Another model that is rapidly gaining in popularity is free floating carsharing, which enables members to pick up and drop off cars anywhere within a designated area. In recent years, a number of CSOs have also experimented with hybrid models of roundtrip rentals and free floating carsharing. Some CSOs also offer one-way carsharing that enables users to return the car to any station operated by the CSO.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, CSOs adjusted their offers to meet new mobility needs of their customers such as longer rentals, short trips replacing public transport and taxi as well as an increased demand for roundtrip rentals as a replacement for car ownership”, said Mr. Cederqvist.

A connected fleet and specialized software platforms are today necessary to run a carsharing business covering operational activities ranging from management of in-vehicle equipment, fleet management, booking management, billing, as well as operations supervision via dashboards and data analytics. While some CSOs are using in-house developed hardware and software solutions for their operations, the majority sources these kinds of products and services from specialised technology vendors.

Some of the vendors offer an end-to-end solution including both telematics equipment and software platforms while other vendors focus on one of the areas. Leading vendors of hardware and software telematics platforms enabling carsharing services include INVERS, Convadis, Continental, Octo Telematics, Vulog, Mobility Tech Green, Targa Telematics and Glide.io.

graphic: carsharing members 2021-2026

Carsharing services are offered by specialist carsharing companies, car rental companies, leasing companies, carmakers, as well as other players such as public transport operators. Examples of leading CSOs owned by carmakers include Free2Move (owned by Stellantis), Volvo On Demand (Volvo Car Mobility), Wible (owned by Kia) and Toyota (Kinto Share).

“In recent years, a few carmakers have exited the carsharing market. BMW and Daimler left the market when they sold their joint venture SHARE NOW to Stellantis in 2022. Similarly, Volkswagen left the market in November 2022 as the carsharing service WeShare was acquired by the German CSO Miles. Stellantis now runs the leading carsharing operator in the car OEM segment Free2Move where SHARE NOW was incorporated in 2022”, said Mr. Cederqvist.

Sixt Share (owned by Sixt), Zipcar (owned by Avis Budget Group) and LeasysGO! (owned by Leasys) are examples of carsharing companies owned by car rental and leasing players. Specialised CSOs include Times Car Plus in Japan, Socar in South Korea, Liandong Cloud and EvCard in China, Enjoy in Italy, Mobility Carsharing in Switzerland, Stadtmobil, Flinkster, Miles and Cambio in Germany, Communauto in Canada and GoGet in Australia.

“The top 25 carsharing service providers accounted for about 71 percent of the carsharing members and managed close to 61 percent of the carsharing fleet worldwide at the end of 2021”, concluded Mr. Cederqvist.

How Do Data Platforms Make Fleet Management More Efficient? The global fleet industry continues to thrive despite the continuous disruption brought about by COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine crisis. In fact, a feature by Valuates Reports highlights that the global fleet management industry is expected to reach $52.5 billion by 2030, which is a significant increase compared to its value in 2020.

Despite the industry’s positive outlook, fleet management companies face a lot of pressing issues. Fluctuating fuel costs, vehicle maintenance, asset utilization, and compliance requirements are some of the concerns that fleet managers need to get under control. That said, tools such as data platforms, which collate relevant and important fleet data, have gained prominence in the fleet management industry.

In this post, let’s take a closer look at how data platforms boost the efficiency and effectiveness of fleet management companies.

Data platforms enhance predictive maintenance

From vehicles to warehouses, there are plenty of things that need regular maintenance in fleet management companies. However, it can be hard for fleet companies to anticipate when their assets will need maintenance. That said, a data analytics platform can enable predictive maintenance in fleet management companies. An article explaining data platforms on MongoDB notes that such software allows organizations to run complex queries using data they already have. Feeding vehicle data and other relevant quantifiable information to a data analytics platform can provide insights that help fleet management companies foresee upcoming issues and vehicle health concerns, saving them from costly repairs down the line.

Data platforms can improve fleet routes

One of the best applications of data platforms in the fleet management industry is its ability to construct more efficient fleet routes. Our article ‘Tracking Based on GPS and the “Internet of Things’ points out that fleet management companies today use IoT devices to track their fleets, monitor road traffic, and weather systems. Because of this, IoT devices hold a lot of real-time data that can help fleet management companies devise the most optimized path for their vehicles, which can help save money, fuel, and time — even if the proposed route is not the shortest one.

Data platforms make it easier to oversee demand and inventory shifts

As a key part of the global supply chain, fleet management companies recognize how vulnerable supply chains are. To help avoid being too affected by disruptions in the supply chain, fleet management organizations must be prudent in realizing future crises and potential industry setbacks like inventory and demand shifts. With the data analytics services powered by artificial intelligence, fleet management companies can gain insight reports regarding demand and inventory trends. Moreover, data analytics algorithms can also notify fleet companies when a demand spike might hit the market, allowing them to sort their affairs in order and prevent shortages. Such technology is used by huge companies like Amazon, which has an anticipatory shipping process in place that notifies them when a customer might potentially buy an item.

Data platforms help avoid low quality shipments

One of the biggest problems faced by fleet management companies is the deterioration of products during transit. This happens due to delays, as well as various transport conditions such as weather and improper handling. Through reports generated by data platforms, fleet management companies can predict and avoid certain situations that can degrade the quality of shipments. In addition, data platforms also improve the transparency in fleet management companies, allowing them to see any problem areas that they might not be aware of. This can work especially well for fleet management companies that work with perishable shipments like food, plants, and pharmaceutical products.

Data platforms help boost customer service

Keeping customers and clients satisfied is a high priority for businesses in the fleet management industry. That’s why fleet management companies invest a lot of money on efficiency-boosting technologies like data platforms. A post on the online community Smart Data Collective reports that by using a tool that aggregates and processes relevant data, companies can closely monitor their fleet’s activity and productivity. Furthermore, it also allows them to build a deeper relationship with clients as such data platforms have features that create unique customer user profiles by combining data from sources such as emails, websites, transactions systems, and CRMs.

Based on the points we’ve listed above, there’s no doubt that data platforms can greatly improve the efficiency of fleet management companies.

The installed base of fleet management systems in South Africa to reach 3.6 million units by 2026

According to a new research report from the leading IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the number of active fleet management systems deployed in commercial vehicle fleets in South Africa reached an estimated 2.0 million in Q4-2021.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.6 percent, this number is expected to reach 3.6 million by 2026. South Africa is a relatively mature telematics market and the penetration is comparably high from an international perspective. Far from all deployments are however full-scale advanced FM solutions. A notable share of the installed fleet telematics systems on the South African market is represented by comparably low-end tracking systems, e.g. light FM solutions, including SVR systems extended with basic FM features.

“The South African fleet management market is clearly dominated by five domestic players with broad telematics portfolios, collectively representing 70 percent of the total number of fleet management systems in use in the country”, said Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight.

He adds that Berg Insight ranks Cartrack and MiX Telematics as the largest providers of fleet management solutions in South Africa. Cartrack alone has more than half a million active FM units in the country.

“The remaining top-5 players are Tracker, Netstar and Ctrack”, continued Mr. Andersson.

Other top-10 players on the South African fleet management market include local vendors such as Bidtrack (Bidvest Group), Digicell and GPS Tracking Solutions (Eqstra Fleet Management), as well as international players including Webfleet Solutions (Bridgestone) and Gurtam. Autotrak, Digital Matter, PFK Electronics, Key Telematics/Radius Payment Solutions and Pointer SA (PowerFleet) are additional top-15 providers, all having estimated installed bases of at least 15,000 fleet management units in the country. Players just outside of the top list include Mtrack (Electronic Tracking Systems), Geotab and Globaltrack.

“International commercial vehicle OEMs including Scania, Daimler, Volvo Trucks, UD Trucks, MAN and Toyota have further all introduced fleet telematics solutions in South Africa”, concluded Mr. Andersson.

chart: installed base fleet management units south africa 2021-2026

Berg Insight’s report on Fleet Management in South Africa also includes an outlook on the overall African market. Africa is clearly a highly diverse geographic region from a fleet management perspective. The continent can in general be divided into three subregions – South Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) and Northern Africa.

The South African fleet telematics market is far ahead of the rest of the continent in terms of adoption, whereas Sub-Saharan Africa is the least developed region. Northern Africa is comparably advanced and well ahead of Sub-Saharan Africa when it comes to fleet telematics penetration, though still quite a bit behind South Africa.

The African fleet management market beyond South Africa is by many industry representatives described as challenging – though certainly also promising – for several reasons.

The installed base of video telematics systems in North America and Europe to exceed 8 million units by 2026

Berg Insight, the leading IoT market research provider, today released a new market study covering the video telematics market.

The integration of cameras to enable various video-based solutions in commercial vehicle environments is a massive trend in the fleet telematics sector.

Berg Insight’s definition of video telematics includes a broad range of camera-based solutions deployed in commercial vehicle fleets either as standalone applications or as an added feature set to conventional fleet telematics. The frontrunning North American video telematics market is three times the size of the European, which is so far largely dominated by activities in the UK. Berg Insight estimates that the installed base of active video telematics systems in North America reached 2.9 million units in 2021.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.5 percent, the active installed base is forecasted to reach almost 6.3 million units in North America by 2026. In Europe, the installed base of active video telematics systems is estimated to over 0.9 million units in 2021. The active installed base in the region is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 17.9 percent to reach 2.1 million video telematics systems in 2026.

The video telematics market is served by a number of different types of players, ranging from specialists focused specifically on video telematics solutions, to general fleet telematics players which have introduced video offerings, and hardware-focused suppliers offering mobile digital video recorders (DVRs) and vehicle cameras used for video telematics.

“Berg Insight ranks Streamax, Lytx and Samsara as the leading video telematics players in their respective categories”, said Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight.

He adds that Streamax is the leading hardware provider, having more than 2.1 million mobile DVRs installed in vehicles worldwide to date, and the company also offers software dashboards which are widely used together with its devices.

“Lytx has the largest number of video telematics subscriptions, while Samsara stands out among the general fleet telematics players with a significant number of camera units deployed across its subscriber base”, continued Mr. Andersson.

Additional sizeable players in this space include the video telematics company SmartWitness (owned by Sensata), the fleet management player Motive (formerly KeepTruckin), the commercial vehicle telematics pioneer Omnitracs (owned by Solera) including the acquired video safety specialist SmartDrive, the hardware-focused video telematics company Howen, and the vision-based safety platform provider Netradyne.

Other noteworthy players competing in the video telematics space include video-focused solution providers such as Nauto, VisionTrack, Bendix (SafetyDirect by Bendix CVS), SureCam, LightMetrics, Idrive, Seeing Machines, CameraMatics, Exeros Technologies, Waylens and Vision Techniques; fleet telematics players including Trimble, Matrix Telematics, Radius Telematics, MiX Telematics, Azuga, Microlise, Forward Thinking Systems, ISAAC Instruments, Trakm8 and AddSecure Smart Transport; as well as the hardware-focused supplier Pittasoft (BlackVue).

Mr. Andersson concluded:

“These players have all reached estimated installed bases in the tens of thousands.”

Why Your Field Service Business Needs Fleet Management

Why Your Field Service Business Needs Fleet ManagementRunning a field service business comes with a lot of benefits and its fair share of challenges. One of the main problems faced by such companies is the management of their motor vehicles and other moving machines. Ensuring that every van or truck is fueled and well serviced before resuming weekly duties can be an enormous challenge.

If you’re in this industry, however, it’s important to note that fleet management is an essential part of field service business growth. It gives you the resources you need to scale your company and serve more clients within the shortest time possible. Whether you’re using software or have a dedicated team of employees to monitor your fleet, such strategies can also protect your business against unseen costs. (1)

This article aims to discuss some benefits of integrating a fleet management system into your field service business. Read on to learn more!

Manage maintenance and fuel costs

As the number of vehicles increases, the costs of maintaining and fueling them rises too. Having separate daily expense reports from different drivers will make it difficult for you to monitor the total spend resulting from the vehicles and plan ahead. With such raw data, you’re also likely to make mistakes in your manual calculations, and this can have repercussions on your business.

With a fleet management system, however, you will be able to compile reports from all drivers and have them in one file. This way, you can easily access the total expenses, monitor the daily or weekly spending, and make the necessary adjustments to plan ahead financially.

Periodic reports from drivers can help in the management process, but they only capture a static view. Fleet management systems can show real-time changes, making it easier to implement any adjustments to ensure that targets are met.

Improve customer retention rate

The success of most businesses isn’t only dependent on the acquisition of new clients but also its ability to retain existing customers. The higher your company’s customer retention rate, the higher its chances of success. So, how does a fleet management system help this?

Take, for example, a company working within the construction industry. Such businesses use scheduling software applications, like the one from Jobber, to make sure that their operations are in sync with their customer’s needs and expectations. Integrating a fleet management system to such business processes will ensure that all the technicians can arrive on time to their scheduled appointments, with the right tools and resources needed to carry out the job. Customers are served on time, as diarized, and the incidents of missed or cancelled appointments is greatly reduced. (3)

In the long run, you’ll be able to increase customer satisfaction since the services will be delivered to them within the expected timeframe, and any unprecedented delays can be communicated beforehand. By doing so, you’ll stand the best chances of being able to retain your valued customers.

Ensures safe and reliable vehicles

Imagine the unenviable situation where you get a call from one of your customers who needs you to perform a site visit at short notice. You then realize that your mode of transport has an issue and cannot get you there. Not only will you lose out on the job, but your customer is also likely contact one of your competitors to help them instead.

Such scenarios are common with start-up businesses and contribute to the reasons that many of them fail to survive past their first 5 years. By planning ahead and having a fleet maintenance management system in place will ensure that you’re aware of all your vehicles’ whereabouts and their conditions. So, in case one breaks down, you can schedule repairs and maintenance to get the issue resolved and organize a replacement vehicle in the meantime. (2)

Apart from increasing reliability, fleet management also ensures the safety of the people using the vehicles. A poorly maintained car or van will endanger your employees’ safety on the road. Important maintenance alerts can be scheduled using the management system to avoid impacting customers and affecting their levels of experience with your company.

Conclusion

Statistics show that the number of fleet management systems is expected to increase by a significant margin in the coming years. This means there are many companies out there that have already seen the importance of this technology and are starting to embrace it.

If you have a fleet and are looking to handle them in-house, this is the best time to opt for professional fleet management. With this system, you can manage the cost of many things, such as fuel and maintenance. You’ll also improve the reliability and safety of your vehicles, helping you avoid any unnecessary internal and external frustrations.

Geotab puts security at the forefront of its solutions by ensuring rigorous security measures that meet and exceed industry best cybersecurity practices. The company has received FIPS 140-2 validation for its cryptographic library in February 2019 and more recently, FedRAMP authorization and ISO 27001 certification for its telematics platform. These compliance certifications and authorizations validate Geotab’s system and organizational processes, enabling the company to offer its fleet management services to all levels of federal, state and local government agencies.

“Governments across the globe are turning to telematics for enhanced fleet management. With its unwavering commitment to information security, Geotab is trusted by over 2000 government agencies and departments at all levels to capture, measure and analyze crucial fleet data with unparalleled granularity,” said Dan Zdarko, Business Development Manager, Federal Government at Geotab.

“Winning this sole-source contract from the Department of the Air Force further solidifies Geotab’s ability to collaborate with agencies that operate at the highest levels of national data security and to provide a customized and highly secured telematics solution.”

The secure and customized fleet management technology includes the following features to help the Department of the Air Force more effectively manage its vehicles.

  • Automated odometer capturing

Bridgestone is now following suit, having acquired the European market leader Webfleet solutions (formerly TomTom Telematics) in 2019 and most recently US-based Azuga in September 2021. Driven by growth strategies based on M&A activity and high-pace organic growth, Berg Insight anticipates a future scenario where the global fleet management market is dominated by a handful of providers with installed bases measured in the millions.

Mr. Andersson concluded:

“The milestone of one million connected units globally has already been surpassed by ten solution providers and three of them have reached the two million range.”

The installed base of fleet management systems in India will reach 6.8 million units by 2025

The number of fleet management systems deployed in vehicle fleets in India was around 3.5 million units at the end of 2020 according to a new research report from the leading IoT analyst firm Berg Insight.

The fleet telematics industry in India is in many respects still nascent and major parts of the addressable market remain largely untapped. The uptake of fleet management solutions is however growing and the market is to some extent favoured by government regulations such as AIS 140. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.0 percent, the total installed base of fleet management systems in India is expected to reach almost 6.8 million units by 2025.

The Indian fleet telematics market is served by many companies including a myriad of small local vendors, a number of pan-Indian players and a few international telematics giants. “Berg Insight ranks WheelsEye, LocoNav, Uffizio and Letstrack as the largest solution vendors in India”, said Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight.

He adds that these four companies all have total installed bases of over 0..5 million units on their respective platforms across all applications and geographies, though the shares represented by fleet management solutions on the Indian market vary substantially. “Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland are the leading players in the OEM segment”, continued Mr. Andersson. The former has collaborated with UK-based Microlise for many years, but the company has now launched a next-generation connected vehicle solution developed in house. Ashok Leyland has reached more than 150,000 vehicles on its connected vehicle platform, working with Trimble which provides the hardware. Trimble is also a leading high-end fleet management solution provider in the aftermarket segment in India.

The remaining top-10 players on the Indian market which have all reached the milestone of 100,000 units are Autoplant, Axestrack, Volty and Fleetx. Notable providers just outside of the top list include Arya Omnitalk, TrackoBit, Millitrack and Transight. The market is also served by many others such as Matchpoint GPS, Bosch, OneQlik, MapmyIndia, BlackBuck, Protrack GPS, Intellicar, Gurtam, Rane t4u, iTriangle, Nippon, IntelliPlanner, EcoCosmo, CarIQ, Intangles, Asset Telematics and Mireo. “These companies all have installed bases in the tens of thousands in India”, concluded Mr. Andersson.

3 Useful Dash Camera Features That Improve Your Fleet Management Process

By Marc Kavinsky, Editor at IoT Business News.

Fleet management is not exactly an easy thing to do (even with help from sophisticated tools)! While it’s easier to put together an optimal route, there is still a wide range of unpredictable factors that can change the course of events. And we all know that each bump in the road can translate into delays and loss of money or customers.

Therefore, fleet managers and owners use modern technologies to monitor and guide their vehicles as they navigate the roads.

One such device is the dashboard camera (or dash cam) for commercial vehicles. The right type of dash cam can provide video evidence in case of an accident, but it can also be used to keep drivers accountable and improve the overall security of your business.

However, it may be a bit difficult to select the right type of camera if you’re not familiar with the features that make them so indispensable to fleet owners. To address this issue, we will discuss the top three features that business owners love in modern dash cams.

#1: Viewing Angle & Storage

The main purpose of a dash cam is to register any traffic incidents. This way, the footage can be used as evidence in an insurance claim or even a police investigation. Therefore, you have several options such as front-facing, dual-facing, or a 360-degree angle camera.

Moreover, truck dash cams have many differences when it comes to features and capabilities. The offer ranges from basic devices with local storage and night vision to WiFi-enabled dash cams for trucks that constantly keep in touch with a central database. There are also devices that can use GPS and Google Maps to register the accurate location of the incident and send the data to the manager.

So, if your vehicles are not too big and easily manageable, a front-facing dash cam may be enough. Bigger vehicles can use a dual-facing camera, while trucks that don’t have reinforcements in the back could use a multi-view camera that sees everything around.

#2: Real-Time Tracking

Some dash cam devices are equipped with advanced GPS modules that log the location of your vehicles and help you keep track of them in real-time. Moreover, if they are integrated with a software tracking system, it’s easy to predict when the truck will arrive at its destination and send warnings if there are delays.

This way, the client will know when to expect the shipment and how to adjust their schedule in case of unexpected delays. In addition, you can use the GPS and logs to keep a watch on how your drivers are using the company’s vehicles.

Of course, these systems are only effective for tracking the vehicle, but if you’re looking for something to monitor the shipment as well, it’s best to use an asset tag device. These are attached to the shipment and can provide useful data on the location and direction of the goods.

#3: Assisting the Driver

Smart dash cams can recognize when the driver is not focused on the road (driving and using the phone, for instance) and issue a warning to let them know it’s not acceptable behavior. They can also issue warnings if the truck is too close to the vehicle in front or if the driver missed a stop sign.

Each warning is logged, so you can use the data to identify reckless drivers and take preventive measures.

Wrap Up

As you can see, smart dash cams are quite a useful tool for both fleet managers and drivers. And, as the technology gets more affordable and smarter, we should see a decrease in accidents and other traffic incidents involving trucks.

The installed base of fleet management systems in Australia and New Zealand will exceed 1.8 million units by 2024

The number of active fleet management systems deployed in commercial vehicle fleets in Australia and New Zealand was almost 1.0 million units in Q4-2019 according to a new research report from the leading IoT analyst firm Berg Insight.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.5 percent, this number is expected to reach more than 1.8 million units by 2024. A wide variety of players serve the fleet telematics market in Australia and New Zealand, ranging from small local vendors to leading international solution providers. The top-15 players in Australia and New Zealand account for 70 percent of the active units on the market, and more than 40 percent is represented by the top-5.

Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight, said:

“Berg Insight ranks Teletrac Navman as the largest provider in Australia and New Zealand.”

He adds that the company has surpassed the milestone of 100,000 units in Australia alone, holding a strong position also in New Zealand.

“The runners-up are Australia-based MTData and New Zealand-based EROAD, followed by US-based Verizon Connect and Netstar Australia”, continued Mr. Andersson.

Other notable vendors with comparably sizeable subscriber bases in the region include the local solution providers IntelliTrac and Smartrak as well as international players including MiX Telematics and Fleet Complete. The latter entered the region through the acquisition of Geotab’s reseller Securatrak. Additional top-15 players in Australia and New Zealand are Bridgestone’s Webfleet Solutions, Coretex, Digital Matter, Procon Telematics, GPSengine and Simply Unified. Players just outside of the top-list moreover include Linxio, Directed Electronics Australia, Ctrack (Inseego), GPSi Group (GPS Innovations) and Fleetdynamics by Fleetcare. Directed Electronics Australia notably works with a large number of commercial vehicle OEMs on the local market.

“OEMs which have introduced fleet telematics solutions in the region independently or through partnerships include Isuzu, Volvo Group, Scania, PACCAR/DAF, Toyota, Hino, Daimler, Mitsubishi and Iveco”, concluded Mr. Andersson.

In Australia, the first two Electronic Work Diaries (EWDs) were recently approved by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR). Following an announcement from the NHVR, Step Global and Teletrac Navman have been approved with conditions to provide EWDs from the beginning of December 2020. While such electronic recording systems are introduced on a voluntary basis, as an alternative to written work diaries, a broad rollout is anticipated on the Australian market. Berg Insight anticipates that the number of alternatives in the EWD approval register will grow as other technology providers increasingly submit systems to be approved by the NHVR.
