Fibocom’s Cat 1 Modules Empower Asset Tracking to Enhance Logistics Management

By Fibocom, a leading global provider of IoT (Internet of Things) wireless solution and wireless communication modules.

Increasing Demands on a Secured and Efficient Logistics Services

With the growing popularity of online shopping, individuals tend to purchase various products from the Internet. Small stuffs like electronic devices, clothes, daily supplies, or large equipment like furniture, home appliances, and even foods and medicines are all available online. Sourcing from the Internet is informative and time-efficient. However, most of the competitive suppliers are located in different regions from the buyers themselves, which results in a long journey and time to deliver the commodities. To make things worse, long-distance transportation is often accompanied by high risks.

Conventional asset tracking methods mostly rely on barcode systems or manual inventory. These operations have the fatal shortcomings of not being able to track the commodities in real-time; and because most operations require manual interventions, errors and losses of commodities are prone to occur during the logistics process. For transportations of drugs or foods that have high requirements on temperature and humidity control, the typical situations where goods deteriorate and become unusable due to the lack of a monitor system are reoccurring all the time. Thus, effective fleet management and asset tracking are particularly important in avoiding damages and losses of commodities as well as guaranteeing the time of delivery.

IoT Enables a More Powerful Asset Tracking System

The Internet of Things enables intelligent and connected asset tracking, which effectively enhances fleet management and ensures the safety as well as quality of commodities. It makes logistics information transparent, allowing logistic companies, senders and recipients to better monitor the logistics process.

Share Real-Time Positioning

fleet tracking on smartphoneThe IoT asset tracking applications are commonly found in IoT trackers. To take land transportation as an example, with the help of GNSS features, the trackers installed on trucks can support real-time precise positioning. Unlike traditional methods where logistics information updates can only be done manually or uploaded through the barcode system after reaching logistics centers, the smart IoT tracker enables the truck to simultaneously synchronize its location information to the cloud and share with logistic companies, senders, and recipients along its way to the destination. The three parties can clearly understand the route and the latest progress, instead of only the driver having such information.

Avoid Losses from Thefts

Smart IoT trackers are also efficient in preventing loss caused by thefts. If unfortunately, thefts occur, the driver can send an alert to the logistics company using the connected tracker, and the latter can immediately notify the police with a precise location. In this way, the truck can be quickly and accurately located. By understanding where the commodities last disappeared, the police can narrow the search scope and shorten the search time, which will increase the chances of retrieval.

Maintain a Qualified Storage Environment

When transporting drugs or foods which demand strict environmental control, IoT temperature and humidity sensors can be installed in the cabinet to monitor real-time parameters and make sure the condition of the cabinet meets the storage requirement. Although many trucks are now equipped with automatic temperature and humidity control systems, there are still many system failures that ultimately lead to deterioration of commodities. But with the intelligent IoT sensors, automatic alerts will be sent to the driver when indicators are below requirement. Drivers can constantly monitor the cabinet environment without stopping the truck and checking.

Cat 1 – An Ideal IoT Solution for Asset Tracking

The Internet of Things enables intelligent asset tracking, simplifying the monitoring process while improving the overall efficiency and safety of logistics. Although IoT asset tracking systems have presented plenty of advantages, yet, lots of organizations that have deployed M2M tracking solutions have experienced connectivity problems. Fibocom’s LTE Cat 1 modules are ideal wireless communication solution for the scenario of asset tracking. As 2G and 3G are about to be phased out, Cat1 technology defeat other new communication technologies with its reliable connectivity and low cost. Unlike LPWAN that is more suitable for static scenarios, Cat 1 can provide fast and stable wireless connections even in a fast-moving scene, allowing real-time positioning without lag. In terms of application costs, CAT1 is much more economical than the LTE Cat 4, which is also 4G technology. In addition, as a type of LTE network, Cat 1 technology can be directly deployed based on the existing 4G network infrastructure without additional network construction required.

Fibocom Cat1 modules for asset tracking

Fibocom’s Cat 1 Module L610 supports LTE, GSM dual-mode communication, VoLTE, audio, camera, LCD, keypad, and other functions. Formed as both LCC+LGA and MiniPCIe packages, it provides universal interfaces such as USB / UART / SPI / I2C / SDIO to meet various application demands of the IoT industry. The product positioning covers the Internet of things market with medium and low rates, such as pan payment, sharing, industrial interconnection, tracking, vehicle after loading and other application scenarios. Provide perfect high-speed experience for customers in the above fields.

Tracking Based on GPS and the “Internet of Things”

An article by Marc Kavinsky, Chief Editor at IoT Business News.

Since the turn of the millennium, one of the technical megatrends observed on the market is the replacement of isolated control units by intelligent (inter)connected devices, named today as the Internet of Things (IoT). Fundamentally, the IoT is considered as a network of physical objects with embedded sensors and communication capabilities allowing remote control or monitoring via an internet-like structure. Among the myriad of IoT devices available on the market today, GPS trackers are offering a wide scope of applications and benefits.

The use of GPS trackers may be a great help in various situations, as their satellite-controlled positioning function can help to find persons in need of protection such as children, patients suffering from alzheimer disease, elderly persons or even pets who ran away. Being able to locate and find our loved ones using easy-to-use tracker systems offer security and peace of mind. But GPS trackers can also be used to locate and protect various types of assets such as vehicles, cars, bicycles or any valuable (and moving) object. In a business environment, fleet management is one of the applications offering immediate benefits and quick ROI of using tracking devices.

Fleet tracking

Many applications and services can be offered using a combination of GNSS (“Global Navigation Satellite System”) and IoT technologies. In a GPS tracker, the positioning sensors can calculate at any time the exact position of a moving unit and send it to a central system. This is the case for fleet management solutions which can use trackers in various situations:

GPS trackers for OBD port
Fleet managers can use products like the MiniFinder® Zepto which is the world’s smallest GPS tracker for fast connection via the vehicle diagnostics socket, OBD port. Once connected to the on-board diagnostics socket, it allows the fleet manager to monitor the position of the vehicle in real-time. The device being “Plug & Play”, it can be installed and ready to run in less than a minute.

Setting alerts to monitor drivers’ behaviour
Several types of alerts can be configured with a GPS tracker designed for fleet monitoring: speed alert (to find out when a vehicle exceeds the preset speed), anti-sabotage alert (to detect unauthorised access and use of a vehicle) and geofencing alert (to be notified when the vehicle is located outside of the authorized perimeter).

Smart tachographs
Since mid-June 2019 and according to VO (EU) Nr. 165/2014, company fleets are legally bound to install a smart tachograph into newly registered vehicles. Therefore, it is necessary for fleet managers to embed fully automated tachographs accepted by the tax office in their vehicles. This is an opportunity to install a GPS tracker as well to collect the vehicle position data to find out the current location of the vehicle – in real-time. Thus, it becomes possible to get detailed reports on the driving times and rest periods of the driver over the entire route.

A GPS tracker is a very helpful tool for any fleet manager. Not only the manager can control the routes of the vehicles, but it can also help the driver optimize his driving behavior. Furthermore, it can be a valuable assistance for streamlining the routes, which leads to an ecological driving method and a significant CO2-reduction.

More transparency thanks to intelligent GPS tracking

Once their vehicles on the road, fleet managers often lack insights on the performance and utilization of their fleets. Using GPS tracking technology bring many benefits to fleet managers: more accurate billing, lower costs for fuel and maintenance, use of the vehicles (detection of private use for example)…

Doubtlessly, logistics and transportation is one of the application fields which can get immediate benefit of using IoT associated to GNSS. With such a technology combination, companies have the opportunity to efficiently organize and manage their fleets of vehicles without heavy investments.

Make your fleet greener with IoT

With new green-friendly technologies appearing in the transport sector, notably systems of carbon reduction, there is a huge interest in using the collected data from a running fleet (through GPS fleet tracking or data transmission software) to search for optimization solutions. Here are a few basic advice on how to make your fleet green.

Basic Requirements to Run a Fleet

Fleet vehicles are often considered as a major source of pollution, because of the important fuel consumption or carbon emissions of the vehicles. When a company run a fleet, there is a lot of basic requirements to be aware of, not only on the tech/material side, but also on energy and economy.

In fact, fleet management has only one goal: cut costs by identifying opportunities based on data collected on, and through, the vehicles from the fleet. This is why the software system invented by FleetGo is particularly effective: it brings to the manager’s attention all necessary details in order to take strategic decisions to increase the business’s efficiency, but also reduce the environmental impact of the fleet.

Most of the time, economy and ecology go together when it comes to the transport sector. Of course, it depends on the size of your business: smaller fleets are better at finding eco-friendly systems or technologies to optimize their performance, larger ones are better at cutting existing costs on gas, insurances or even, infringement fines.

But how can you make your fleet even greener than that? By using your data!

How to Have a Greener Fleet of Vehicles

Getting a better fleet of vehicles is not easy, but with the right tools, you can achieve this objective. First, you have to think about reducing the fleet’s emissions, and not cutting the number or the type of vehicles. Measure the emissions and set new goals, thanks to the FleetGo data system, that allow accurate and real-time data gathering. Taking also into account the data from the drivers of the vehicles, and the ones on the vehicle itself, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Select better vehicles depending on the needs
  • Improve the vehicle’s use, in terms of gas consumption but also eco-friendly driving

Of course, you have to be realistic about your goals: no one can achieve a “zero-carbon emission” fleet, neither a 100% green fleet. Try to think about it as a balance : what you put in the atmosphere, you cut it down somewhere else, using the data at your disposal.

But maybe fleet optimization is the real solution out there for you.

Using Smart Technology for Your Fleet’s Optimization

Want to avoid tachograph infringement? Comply with the local driving regulations (like DOT hours for example)? Manage at the same time your drivers and your overall fleet? Then, the solution is right in front of you: smart technology. Why “smart” better than just “technology”? Because “smart technology” adapts to your needs and the ones of your clients.

Using IoT-based fleet tracking allows a better comprehensive approach to the overall fleet’s consumption, expenses and potential fines. It gives important information on where are your vehicles, how they perform and what needs to be focused on.

Then you just decide: should you change your vehicles to more green-friendly ones, it may not change that much. Optimize your fleet by adjusting the number of running vehicles, reducing the number of fines, adapting each vehicle to green standards, that is key to ensure your fleet goes green.

So, no, the future does not belong to electric vehicles, just to some technology adjustments you have right in your hands.

Omnicomm releases fleet tracking mobile applications for iOS and Android

Omnicomm, one of the world leading developers and manufacturers of fuel consumption monitoring equipment and telematics solutions for various fleet management needs, released a mobile application for its cloud service Omnicomm Online.

The application runs on iOS and Android platforms, and it is now available on App Store and Google Play.

Following the intention to provide customers with more convenient and practical service for vehicle monitoring Omnicomm decided to develop mobile applications for Omnicomm Online cloud service. It allows fleet owners to manage their fleet remotely, track the movement of vehicles, as well as generate reports on preset number of parameters. For convenience of mobile usage, the reports of the new application included the ones that are most popular among Omnicomm Online clients:

Report on the location of transport
This report allows users to display information both concerning one vehicle and handle multicast requests, determining the location of several vehicles or the entire fleet at the same time.

Report on the movement of a vehicle over a given time period
Like in the web version Omnicomm Online, in this report it is possible to monitor the movement of transport in a given period of time. The track shows the events that occur on the way of the vehicle: refills, drains, stops, etc.

Report on the volume of fuel
This report displays graphs on fuel consumption of vehicles, as well as the periods of running engine (on / off).

Report on refills and drains
The report on refills and drains provides information on the changes in the level of fuel in vehicles, highlighting drains with red color.

Statistics report
This report provides general data on the distance covered, the amount of fuel consumed, average speed and other parameters.

“When developing the mobile application, we paid special attention to the difference in the use of tablets and smartphones. In fact, we have released a separate mobile application for each of them. We also paid a thorough attention to visualization of the interface in portrait and landscape modes, which ultimately resulted in the development of 8 individual interface representations. All this will allow our customers to use our services with convenience”, – Maxim Pavlukhin, Omnicomm Deputy Executive Director, commented.

In addition, users have the opportunity to receive notifications, the algorithms for which they previously set up in the web version Omnicomm Online. Thus, they can always be aware of the events taking place with their fleet.

Omnicomm Deputy Director General Stanislav Emelyanov resumed:
“The release of Omnicomm Online mobile applications is another step on the way for more convenient use of Omnicomm products.”

“With Omnicomm Online mobile application our customers have the opportunity to obtain information on their vehicles from anywhere in the world where there is mobile network. It makes our service not only reliable, but also really easy and convenient to use.”

Rock Seven announces the launch of a machine to machine (M2M) data communication module for its RockFLEET tracking system

The optional module, factory-installed at point-of-purchase, will enable onboard equipment to be integrated with RockFLEET, allowing data to be transferred between vessel and shore.

Rock Seven says the telemetry and control functions have the potential to improve vessel operations, including reducing fuel consumption and enhancing maintenance processes.

Nick Farrell, director at Rock Seven, says:

“It’s vital to know where all ships in your fleet are at any one time, but it’s also becoming more important to have data about how your vessels are operating, in order to operate as efficiently as possible. With our new M2M data module, RockFLEET can provide both position data and any other kind of data required, and can even be used as an intelligent hub for automation on board or on shore.”

The system works on a Pay As You Go basis, with users paying only for the months the system is in use, pre-purchasing credits for transmitting tracking positions and other data.

“RockFLEET requires no annual contract and operates on a Pay As You Go basis, with each location, or M2M data transmission costing as little as £0.03. This makes it a low-cost option for accurate global vessel tracking and lower-bandwidth data transmission for any application the user needs,” says Farrell.

“The idea is well proven with applications as diverse as ocean-going environmental sensor buoys, low-earth-orbit balloon flights and remote engine servicing telemetry. We know there are a multitude of possibilities this product opens up for the marine industry, and we’re keen to support users to develop their own unique applications for ships.”

M2M integration with on-board equipment is available using a variety of serial protocols, and the open API means data in any format can be delivered to the users’ own applications.

GateTel and Telit Expand Cooperation in North America with HSPA+ and EV-DO Cellular and GNSS Terminals

GateTel Set to Enter U.S. Market with Terminals Based on Telit Modules.

Telit Wireless Solutions, a global provider of high-quality machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions, products and services and GateTel Inc., a developer and manufacturer of GPRS, GSM, UMTS and GPS terminals, today announced an expansion of longstanding partnership into the North American market. With the opening of GateTel’s new regional offices in Newport Beach, California, GateTel and Telit – who have been strong partners for over 10 years – are now set to cooperate as GateTel plans to manufacture fully certified terminals for the OEM market based solely on Telit modules in California.

GateTel’s North America production is to start with three cellular terminals for the top three wireless networks, all supporting GNSS: the GT-HE910-NAG, the GT-DE910-S and the GT-DE910-V. The new products enable connectivity to the respective U.S. mobile network operators. Telit is collaborating closely with GateTel to ensure the terminals are fully network approved when they arrive in the market later this year.

The three new terminals are based on Telit’s xE910 family products. The GT-HE910-NAG is based on the HE910-NAG HSPA+ module capable of 14.4 Mbps downlink and 5.7 Mbps uplink data rates; plus the SL869 GPS+GLONASS GNSS receiver module. The GT-DE910-S and GT-DE910-V are based on the DE910-DUAL 1xEV-DO Rev.A module. The DE910-DUAL is capable of 3.1 Mbps downlink and 1.8 Mps uplink data rates; and is equipped with an embedded GPS+GLONASS GNSS receiver, which will be used by GateTel for the positioning functionality in these two EV-DO terminals.

The xE910 Unified Form Factor family is comprised of pin-to-pin compatible devices in Telit’s broadest range of cellular air interfaces and band combinations making it a pillar of the concept “design once and deploy globally”. A one-time design and integration effort enables worldwide or regional device re-use across different data rates and wireless technologies with air interfaces in GSM/GPRS, UMTS/HSPA+, 1xRTT, EV-DO, and LTE. The xE910 family fully preserves the core design of the application or device from launch to phase-out with family modules packaged in a common 28.2×28.2 mm LGA footprint; and is ideally suited for compact sized solutions for mid to high-volume applications.

GateTel GT HE910 NAGThe SL869 offers class leading multi-constellation GNSS functionality. Dead-reckoning and TRAIM support can additionally provide an integrated, cost effective solutions for navigation, tracking and timing applications. The Jupiter SL869 offers seamless integration with Telit cellular modules.

“It is very rewarding to help GateTel, a Telit customer since day one, to expand into North America,” said Mike Ueland, senior vice president and general manager of Telit Wireless Solutions North America. “GateTel has been a loyal Telit customer working with us in Europe, the Middle East and now North America.”

“The last couple of years have seen an increase in demand for our terminal products,” said David Ezer, CEO of GateTel, Inc.

“North America is a market where many concepts and ideas are tried. We are excited to offer a complete line of M2M terminals in the States to our new customers.”

New Asset Optimization Solution Helps Fleet Owners Gain a Competitive Advantage.

Omnilink today announced a collaboration with Sprint to offer Omnilink Asset Tracker for Trailers™, which enables fleet owners to locate and manage trailers across the United States. A turnkey solution featuring hardware, software and service, Omnilink Asset Tracker for Trailers™ provides transportation, construction, retail and other companies with new options for managing their assets.

Omnilink Asset Tracker for Trailers combines the Omnilink Asset Tracker™ application with the CalAmp TTU-720 device, which uses GPS and Sprint’s nationwide Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network to provide fleet managers with the exact location of every trailer. With this real-time and/or historical information, fleet managers can:

  • Improve security and utilization of remote trailers with configurable alerts for trailers that are moved or sit idle for too long.
  • Reduce costs by automating inventory management, saving fuel and time searching for remote trailers and freeing staff to focus on more productive activities.
  • Know the location of all trailers in-transit to improve responsiveness and provide delivery status to customers, particularly those with just-in-time supply chains.
  • Increase revenue by increasing the frequency of trailer turns between arrival and departure.
  • Increase billable hours by accounting for the actual time trailers are detained or stored at a customer site.

“In today’s economy, fleet owners can’t afford to have any more trailers sitting idle without producing revenue,”
Wayne Ward, vice president-M2M and Connected Transportation, Sprint, said:

“Our joint solution with Omnilink uses our network technology to help keep cargo moving. It determines which trailers are parked in each yard, which trailers need to be picked up, and the precise GPS location of every trailer in a fleet, giving owners real-time location information necessary to ensure that every trailer is maximizing revenue. Wireless asset tracking is another example of how connected devices are changing every aspect of our lives, impacting how we work and live.”

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, fleets are accumulating more than three trailers per tractor to accommodate for the lack of trailer visibility and status. This leaves costly, non-revenue generating trailers sitting idle at customer locations or altogether lost, wasting resources in the process.

“Our continued collaboration with Sprint expands our portfolio of tracking solutions, allowing us to better address the needs of fleets, offering them an out-of-the-box solution to optimize the use of a fleet’s inventory of trailers, improve trailer and cargo security and increase carrier profitability,” said Steve Hudson , chief development officer at Omnilink.“By eliminating the wasted time and resources many fleets have been forced to struggle with, fleet managers can instead focus on growing and improving their business.”

Monitech’s Car Lighter Tracker is market’s newest product to integrate trending satellite positioning technology based on combined GPS and GLONASS for improved location accuracy and speed.

Monitech Sp. z o.o., a Poland-based tracking technology innovator and Telit Wireless Solutions, a leading global provider of high-quality machine-to-machine (M2M) modules and value-added services, today announced the launch of Monitech’s Car Lighter Tracker or CLT, a zero-Installation compact tracking device based on Telit’s cellular M2M, GPS+GLONASS satellite location module technologies, and new m2mAIR high-value connectivity and management services.

Designed for the automotive aftermarket and fleet management segments, the product is supported by flexible and easy to use web and mobile application tools.

The CLT is a compact device that operates directly from its mounted position in the car’s cigarette lighter or 12V DC power port. It is equipped with Telit’s Jupiter SL869, a state-of-the-art 32-channel global position satellite receiver module capable of obtaining a position fix from either GPS or GLONASS satellite constellations. This capability gives the CLT superior precision and speed, making it possible for vehicle coordinates to be obtained quickly even in areas traditionally challenging for GPS-only tracking devices, such as urban canyons and above-ground parking garages.

Besides ultra-accurate tracking while parked or driving, built-in high-sensitivity accelerometers which will be incorporated into the product’s second generation planned for release next year, will allow the CLT to detect attempted intrusions or collisions while the vehicle is parked. When these are detected, alerts can be transmitted according to user programmed preferences, via Facebook, Twitter, SMS-text message or e-mail to law-enforcement or other recipients.  CLT users can manage tracking and alarm settings though an easy to use online portal or through mobile apps available for iPhones, or Android devices.

The CLT is serviced and cellular-connected through a comprehensive suite of advanced services from Telit’s new business unit, m2mAIR.  The advantages for Monitech are numerous because tracking devices need reliably connect anywhere but not at the expense of economic viability. With m2mAIR, Monitech can maintain tight cost control over cellular subscriptions for each CLT allowing the SIMs and cellular modules to be provisioned and managed throughout the CLT’s integration cycle, i.e., production, testing, inventory, and activation. m2mAIR’s comprehensive coverage is also fundamental to cellular-connected tracking business models.

Patryk Szymczak, chief executive officer, Monitech, said:

“With the CLT you are always in the know with notifications about your vehicle’s whereabouts and alarm events sent straight to your mobile phone. And because of m2mAIR the product works right out-of-the box.”

Telit’s GE865-QUAD enables reliable cellular data communication for the CLT anywhere in the world, in consumer, commercial and industrial segments such as automotive aftermarket, fleet management, asset tracking, security, and other location-based services (LBS) application areas. Once activated, the CLT connects through Telit’s m2mAIR managed and value added services providing Monitech the ability to precisely tailor its location-based services to ensure the highest levels of customer satisfaction in this competitive market.

Monitech’s CLT is one of the first products to integrate a Telit GLONASS & GPS GNSS receiver with an m2mAIR connected cellular module accurately reflecting Telit’s shift towards a more service-oriented range of solutions for our customers. We are proud to have played such an important role in bringing the CLT to market,” said Dominikus Hierl, chief marketing officer at Telit Wireless Solutions.

Monitech expects to start volume shipments of the CLT in November 2012, with Release Candidate (RC1) units out in 1st October.
