The Helium Foundation Announces SkyNet IoT’s Roaming Integration with Helium

The Helium IoT Network expands into the maritime domain, supporting SkyNet IoT’s existing customers in the Netherlands and expansion into Boca Raton, Florida.

The Helium Foundation, stewards of the Helium Network, the world’s first and largest decentralized wireless network powered by blockchain, today announced SkyNet IoT, a LoRaWAN multi-network hosting and roaming provider, is integrating with the Helium Network.

The Dutch-based company is expanding its IoT solutions to South Florida in 2024, leveraging the Helium Network in the U.S.

SkyNet IoT hosts and facilitates seamless roaming across multiple LoRa networks. One of their key sensor deployments focuses on the North Sea, which lacks reliable Internet connectivity despite its heavy maritime traffic and commerce. The decision to build solutions on the Helium Network signifies a major expansion of SkyNet IoT’s network and continues to broaden Helium’s reach beyond terrestrial areas into the maritime sector.

“We are thrilled SkyNet IoT is integrating to roam on Helium to connect the unconnected regions across the world,” said Abhay Kumar, Helium Foundation CEO.

“The permissionless, ubiquitous, and affordable nature of the Helium Network has lowered the barriers to entry, empowering more businesses and ultimately, consumers, to benefit from IoT solutions and the products they enable.”

The Helium Network, which has expanded global LoRaWAN coverage significantly, opens the door to countless IoT applications that will provide valuable insights about conditions in the water and on land. SkyNet IoT has already deployed thousands of sensors transmitting data over the Helium Network and has plans to install several hundred more in South Florida this year. Sensors onboard marine vessels provide real-time intelligence on water detection, tank contents, inclination angles, accelerations, vibrations, forces on cables, temperature and gas levels.

The expansion of SkyNet IoT into South Florida is expected to further propel the region’s technological and economic growth with key sectors such as agriculture and maritime safety through collaboration with local municipalities, port authorities and businesses.

“The synergy of SkyNet IoT and the Helium Network strengthens our position as leaders in advancing IoT connectivity on a global scale,” said Remy De Jong, SkyNet IoT Founder. “We are building much-needed wireless infrastructure along the major coasts and harbors to gather real-time intelligence that ensures the safety of the people who live and work in these areas.”

The Helium Network was launched in 2019 with the mission of delivering a decentralized, open-source, accessible, and secure wireless network. Hundreds of thousands of Hotspots power the Helium Network that’s used by people around the world, including businesses, governments, and municipalities.

Everynet, one of the world’s largest network operators for national LoRaWAN® networks, is pleased to offer connectivity access to its long-range wide area network (LoRaWAN) through AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN.

AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN is a fully managed LoRaWAN Network Server (LNS) that allows customers to connect wireless devices to the LoRaWAN protocol for low-power, long-range wide area network connectivity with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Now, those customers can seamlessly connect devices at scale to the cloud without having to deploy and manage the radio networking infrastructure. This eliminates the need to build out and manage dedicated LoRaWAN networks.

Everynet access through AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN is immediately available to AWS customers across Everynet’s national LoRaWAN network footprint in the United States and the United Kingdom.

“We’ve been pleased at the broad range of industries and use cases that participated in public preview. It’s amazing how many different types of companies are finding tangible, real-world success using LoRaWAN technology,” states Gabriel Nave, VP Business Development for Everynet. “With network access now generally available, we’re confident even more companies will realize the benefits of LoRaWAN technology to streamline their operations, enhance predictive maintenance and improve daily living.”

One such company is Subeca, whose E2E water management platform leverages LoRaWAN technology – helping water utilities and their customers improve water efficiencies and reduce waste. Explains Subeca CEO Patrick Keaney, “Subeca’s move to AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN offered a seamless transition from our previous LNS. Since making the change, we’ve reduced our reoccurring costs by more than 90%. This cost reduction has enabled smaller utilities and companies within the irrigation market to adopt our platform – creating an environment for greater water conservation across the United States.”

While public preview participants have represented utilities, grocery chains, logistics companies and more, the integration between Everynet and AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN also provides an opportunity for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) to expand their reach as well.

“Mobile Network Operators in the United States have taken various approaches to integrating LoRaWAN into their offerings,” explains Everynet’s Nave. “The robust infrastructure of AWS coupled with Everynet’s neutral host RAN creates a platform that will make it much easier for them going forward.”

Everynet engagements in Indonesia and Brazil offer examples of how MNOs benefit from LoRaWAN. In 2020, Everynet was selected to help Telkom, Indonesia’s largest telecommunication and network provider, build and operate the national LoRaWAN network infrastructure needed to enable the Industrial Revolution 4.0 taking place in Indonesia. Thanks to Everynet’s neutral-host network approach, the partnership with Telkom enables all of Indonesia’s MNOs, ASPs, MSPs and ISPs to offer robust Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) IoT services. This access allows end users to gather huge amounts of previously ignored data, empowering more informed and real-time decisions related to Indonesia’s economic and social life.

Similarly, in 2022, through its partnership with American Tower Company in Brazil, Algar Telecom, the communications and IT company of Grupo Algar, began leveraging Everynet’s LoRaWAN network throughout Brazil to expand access to and adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions.

LoRaWAN technology offers a host of benefits for end users, integrators and MNOs alike, including:

  • Low-cost connectivity. Users can avoid the expense and long-term resource investment needed to implement and manage a dedicated LoRaWAN network. It requires no upfront network CAPEX and connectivity is consumed on an ultra-low-cost messaging plan.
  • Expediate time to market. Quickly and securely connect LoRaWAN devices to the cloud – at scale – via AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN, reducing the time to deployment from months to minutes and speeding time to revenue.
  • Simplified billing. With AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN, powered by Everynet connectivity, customers will receive a single, consolidated bill from AWS encompassing messaging and connectivity. There are no upfront commitments or minimum fees. Subscribers receive simple, transparent billing directly from AWS.

“Everynet and AWS are working together to make it simple for LoRaWAN customers to connect their devices to Everynet’s public network,” said Yasser Alsaied, vice president of IoT at AWS.

“AWS IoT customers no longer need to deploy and manage private networks, which not only reduces engineering efforts, but also expedites the process to bring a complete LoRaWAN solution built on AWS IoT Core to production. We are delighted to work with Everynet to simplify the development process for our customers.”

Interoperability in IoT Ecosystems: Navigating Challenges and Strategies

A year plan for the price of a cup of coffee, M2MC is launching a new tariff for IoT networks

The new prepaid Gigatariff from M2MC for LowPower networks will operate in 45 countries around the world.

M2MC, a global leader in the field of device communication management in the Internet of Things (IoT), is launching a new prepaid Gigatariff.

Its main advantage is the price: for connecting and sending data from IoT devices, users will pay only €2,59 per year, which is no more than the price of a cup of quality coffee.

The obstacles of IoT

M2M Communication Holding is the company behind the service miotiq, a communication platform for LowPower NB-IoT and LTE-M networks with low maintenance costs and low energy consumption. However, getting the fastest and most efficient connection to these networks was not an easy task. Compared to communication via traditional mobile data networks, these are much more demanding technologies.

For a long time, in the area of connection to NB-IoT and LTE-M, the limit was not only the high price of the end devices, but also the price of communication. Compared to regular mobile tariffs, the prices were at first glance low, usually reaching a maximum of €10 per year. However, the price was still too high for deploying tens and hundreds of thousands of sensors (in one country). M2MC is now bringing a major change.

Solution from M2MC: Gigatariff

With the Gigatariff, the price of a connection a for a year in 45 countries of the world (including, for example, most EU countries, the USA and Australia) corresponds to the price of one cup of coffee in a good café. A complete secure connection between the device and an IoT hub (such as Microsoft Azure, Google IoT or AWS) is now available for €25.90 for 10 years. The annual costs are thus only €2.59.

Karel Krčmář, founder and CEO of M2MC:

“The new tariff for NB-IoT and LTE-M networks is a response to customer needs. It makes us one of the best both in technology and in price for IoT services. Our customers have a truly functioning and secure service at their disposal, which enables them to mass deploy IoT solutions in 45 countries around the world.”

Unlimited tariff

The new plan includes a total of 1 Gb of data. In the context of LowPower devices, it can basically be described as an unlimited tariff, because end IoT devices (such as sensors) transmit only a very small amount of data and work for several years without the need to replace or recharge the batteries.

LowPower technologies are used, for example, to control energy consumption. They make it possible to send information about the state of the water, gas or electricity meters (or the flood sensor or security sensor for example) for several years without the need to recharge the battery.

Outlook for LowPower networks

Czech Republic (together with Holland) became one of the first countries in the world that could use NB-IoT technologies. It was launched with full coverage both outdoors and indoors five years ago. Since then, the miotiq platform has helped dozens of global device developers for these LowPower networks and application developers that work with sensor data to connect their products quickly and efficiently.

Experts predicted an early mass deployment of sensors and other LowPower devices. The speed of deployment was delayed first by the covid-19 pandemic and now by the crisis associated with the war in Ukraine and overheating economies. However, M2MC is optimistic about future developments in the field of LowPower devices.

“There are already reports of a calming down in the supply chains of components, which means that the prices will be reduced again, and their deliveries will be accelerated. Heavy investment in semiconductor manufacturing in the US and Europe will also aid lower prices. We are already seeing real projects for tens of thousands of sensors. As they will gradually increase, these numerous orders will also push prices down,” explains Karel Krčmář.

Kerlink & VIoT Group Deploying Vietnam’s First Nationwide LoRaWAN® Network & Helium Blockchain System

Kerlink, a specialist in solutions dedicated to the Internet of Things (IoT), and VIoT Group, a pioneer in smart urban & industrial park development in Vietnam, today announced their partnership to rollout Vietnam’s first nationwide LoRaWAN® IoT network, and VIoT’s plan to support Helium’s “The People’s Network”.

Launched in 2017, VIoT introduced IoT smart-city applications in Vietnam in 2018 with a LoRaWAN® streetlighting project and has expanded its offer to vertical-market applications such as smart metering by utilities, end-to-end air-water-quality monitoring, and early flood-incident management systems.

The company’s lighting-as-a-service (LaaS) and connectivity-as-a-service (CaaS) business-leasing models will be deployed through its partnership with Kerlink to enable Helium’s HNT blockchain and cryptocurrency mining in peer-to-peer wireless IoT networks. VIoT will thus distribute Kerlink Helium-enabled hotspots and deploy its own IoT network at the same time.

“These deployments will make it possible for Vietnamese factories, businesses, cities and consumers to benefit from of cost effective, easy-to-deploy vertical wireless solutions, and to use Helium’s global, decentralized network of hotspots to disrupt traditional telcos’ subscription-based operating models. Think AirBnB or Grab for telcos: if I have an empty room, power and internet why would I not use it as a network tower?” said Viet Nguyen, founder and CEO of VIoT Group.

“VIoT Group collaborates with partners and household owners in strategic locations to roll out Helium’s The People Network. Our goal is to be the first to leverage this opportunity in Vietnam for corporations and local governments that aim to benefit from the most cost-effective and highly secured blockchain-powered IoT backbone network.”

The company said the initial deployment phase of its LoRaWAN® IoT network, including approximately 350 Kerlink gateways, will be completed by the end of May and will cover six Vietnamese cities and municipalities this year. The second phase, will install approximately 1,400 additional Kerlink gateways, is expected to be completed by the end of 2022 and cover 10 more cities in 2023.

More broadly, the company will market its nationwide managed IoT network for turnkey solutions mixing sensors, connectivity, integration, and applications, such as smart lighting and smart metering, in a single open IoT platform.

Called “The People’s Network”, Helium technology uses the company’s LongFi™ architecture that combines the LoRaWAN® wireless protocol (200 times the coverage of the WiFi protocol) with the Helium blockchain, enabling any LoRaWAN® device to transfer data on the Helium network. This connection provides public, long-range and low-power wireless coverage for LoRaWAN®-enabled IoT sensors and devices because LongFi’s roaming capabilities support micropayment transactions so customers pay only based on network usage.

“Individuals worldwide have used Helium’s network to create more than 642,000 hotspots,” said Rene Arbefeuille, Kerlink’s vice president for Asia Pacific.

“The connected hotspots provide cities with miles of low-power network coverage for billions of devices and are paid in Helium’s cryptocurrency, HNT. Kerlink’s industrial-grade indoor Wirnet™ iFemtoCell and Wirnet™ iFemtoCell-evolution, as well as carrier-grade outdoor Wirnet™ iStation IoT gateways, have been enabling the use of HNT cryptocurrency mining on the LoRaWAN® protocol for the past year.”

Senet’s Network Now Reaches 2,000 Cities, New Coverage Map with Helium and Planning Tools

Senet, Inc., and Helium, today introduced new network visualization and planning tools to assist customers with deploying IoT solutions at scale across the United States.

Integrated Coverage Map

Through a previously announced network integration, Senet is providing its customers with LoRaWAN connectivity from Helium-compatible Hotspots under its Extended Coverage Services. Supporting this integration, Senet has enhanced its US Coverage Map to present a harmonized view of its public carrier-grade coverage and areas covered by more than 150,000 Helium-compatible Hotspots in the US.

This integrated and interactive network map empowers customers with planning information from the nation’s largest and fastest growing LoRaWAN network providers. The partnership increases Senet’s metro area coverage from 1,300 to over 2,000 cities and densifies coverage in major shipping ports, key logistics corridors, and major agricultural areas. It is the first US-wide LoRaWAN network and the only LoRaWAN network in the US designed, built and operated by US owned businesses.

Key attributes of the coverage map include:

  • Display of Senet and Helium coverage from a single map view, illustrating overlapping and extended coverage areas
  • Zip code search and zoom functionality, allowing users to view the coverage available at any location
  • Dynamic updating as new gateways and hotspots are deployed
  • Viewable on both web and mobile platforms

View the Coverage Map

Enhanced Network Planning Tools

Senet has also updated its Application Provider Portal tools to further assist its customers with network coverage guidance and density information for application development and deployment planning. Through the click of a mouse, Senet customers can “drop a pin” on a network planning map. Subsequently, path quality to that location from the Senet network is automatically calculated and displayed along with the display of the number of Helium gateways in proximity to that location.

“Over our years of experience in IoT, we have learned very clearly that this is not a ‘build it and they will come’ network opportunity. Rather, each customer application requires flexible geographic coverage and various signal propagation models. As we partner with companies like Helium to deliver ubiquitous LoRaWAN network connectivity across the US, providing standardized coverage information and robust planning tools are increasingly important in delivering on the promise of flexible IoT connectivity where it is needed, when it’s needed, and at the right cost,” said Bruce Chatterley, CEO of Senet. “These tools will continue to gain functionality over time, serving as indispensable resources for developing, deploying, and managing IoT solutions at scale.”

Increased Data Traffic

The densified coverage areas where Senet and Helium networks overlap, combined with areas of Helium coverage where Senet is not yet deployed, offer immediate and measurable value to solution providers and end customers.

For example, even though Senet has deployed a LoRaWAN network across all five boroughs of New York City, one of Senet’s major customers experienced a 25% increase in connected asset reporting as a result of gaining access to Helium coverage through Senet’s network services.

“Completing our network integration with Senet was an exciting and important first step in our partnership,” said Amir Haleem, Helium’s CEO and co-founder.

“Now, with Senet’s expanded network visualization and planning tools, customers can more easily identify coverage areas, plan their connectivity requirements, and scale their solution deployments across Helium and Senet coverage areas.”

KORE and Everynet Expand Partnership into the U.S.

KORE Customers Will Have First Access to New National LoRaWAN Network.

KORE today announced that it is expanding its international partnership with Everynet, the world’s largest network operator for national LoRaWAN® networks, into the U.S. at a time when the need to capture and transport small packets of data is growing and use cases for Massive IoT are accelerating.

According to Transforma Insights, by 2025, 358 million Massive IoT devices will exist in the U.S. and over 2 billion devices globally. This trend is one of several that is fueling the expanded relationship between the two companies.

“Our relationship with Everynet is battle-tested in Brazil where we started our partnership some three years ago, and we are bringing those learnings into the U.S. as LoRa begins to mature in this country,” said KORE President and CEO Romil Bahl.

“While most people think of KORE as the global, independent leader in cellular IoT CaaS, the reality is we also integrate satellite bearers and provide services related to unlicensed cellular technologies like LoRa.”

Leveraging the KORE and Everynet partnership, for example, water utilities can operate, maintain, and monetize a water distribution system efficiently. Water metering is a Massive IoT use case that requires a variety of connectivity needs on the network, not just big bandwidth provided by cellular connectivity, which makes LoRaWAN a well-suited connectivity technology.

KORE customers will have the opportunity to take advantage of the new LoRaWAN network Everynet is currently building in the U.S. This coincides well with the impending 2G and 3G sunsets, as IoT customers create migration plans that leverage lower-complexity connectivity for simpler IoT use cases. LoRaWAN provides customers with IoT connectivity options that ensure the transition from 2G and 3G is seamless. LoRaWAN is also gaining ground because of its network longevity, broad coverage characteristics, and the ability to lower the overall total cost of ownership of networks.

Everynet expects its LoRaWAN network to be operational in 36 cities and 100 logistics points by the end of November 2021. Already, the company systems have been fully integrated into the KORE platforms for the U.S. market to enable customers to simplify their Massive IoT deployments.

KORE and Everynet have a proven track record of success working together to reduce the complexity most organizations face when rolling out IoT initiatives. Since 2018, the two companies have been partnering in Brazil to deploy multiple solutions, leveraging the LoRaWAN network and the KORE platform for message brokerage and device management developed at its innovation hub, KORE Labs. The companies have implemented gas metering, water metering, and asset monitoring solutions throughout Brazil for industrial companies, municipalities, and manufacturers.

“We’re delighted to bring this compelling offering to the U.S. market with KORE, by building on our successes and learnings abroad,” said Lawrence Latham, Chief Executive Officer of Everynet. “Important advantages organizations will experience with a national LoRaWAN network are secure ultra-low cost connections, long-battery life, and a simple means to connect billions of devices to the cloud. We are looking forward to working with KORE Wireless to help businesses gain operational efficiencies, enable innovation, and create new business models.”

Citymesh acquires Belgian Sigfox IoT network: "Experts in telecommunications, from 0G to 5G"

Telecom operator Citymesh acquires the Belgian Sigfox operator ENGIE M2M

With this acquisition, Citymesh completes its wireless portfolio with 0G connectivity. The Sigfox network is ideally suited for IoT projects that use ultra-low bandwidth and need long battery life. The global roaming capabilities will allow Citymesh to support both national and international customers.

Citymesh 0G

The choice for the Sigfox network was made deliberately. Compared to other 0G networks, Sigfox offers ultra-low power consumption combined with low hardware and network costs. This network type is ideally suited for digital water meters, track & trace applications, and challenging locations such as concrete or underground structures.

A 0G network efficiently sends small data packets over low frequencies that reach further than, for example, WiFi. In Belgium, the Sigfox network currently connects more than 250,000 IoT devices.

Strategic acquisition

With this acquisition of the Sigfox network, Citymesh now owns a national IoT network in addition to its 4G and 5G licences. This 0G technology is perfect for IoT applications thanks to its lower power consumption and low bandwidth.”The acquisition of a national IoT network further shapes our ambition as the fourth telecom operator in the B2B market,” states Mitch De Geest, CEO of Citymesh. “With this network, we can support customers’ IoT projects, using a single contract, anywhere in the world.”

In December 2020, Citymesh announced a new majority shareholder, Cegeka. Thanks to this strategic partnership, Citymesh is now able to further invest in and expand its technology portfolio. Mitch De Geest: “Citymesh will focus on installing, monitoring and connecting sensors. From that point on Cegeka can work on the normalization, consolidation and visualization of the data to optimize business processes.”

Stijn Bijnens, CEO of Cegeka:

“The expansion of the wireless portfolio with 0G connectivity creates added value for Cegeka. It offers additional possibilities for our IT solutions. We can collect data from our customers via the Sigfox IoT network. Our specialists in the field of data science and data intelligence can subsequently help our customers to use that data in a smart way to make better decisions.”

Strengthened market position

Citymesh already offers IoT services and will further strengthen its market position with this IoT network.

“Now, we can offer all communication technologies, from 0G to 5G,” says Mitch De Geest: “Our customers, ranging from cities to enterprises, can rely on us for all-in-one solutions, completely tailored to their budget and needs. For example, a city can opt for a WiFi network in the public library, smart city furniture in a market square and noise sensors in busy streets to map out noise pollution. A company may choose a mobile private 5G network combined with smart sensors. For every connectivity question, we have an appropriate solution.”

Shared ambitions

The ENGIE M2M team, existing customers and projects are incorporated into Citymesh. “The operational and commercial synergies are clear. The ambition to be trusted IoT advisors for our customers and partners was always there. Through this acquisition, our customers will have access to a wide range of technologies and in doing so we extend the value proposition,” explains Dirk Indigne, CEO of ENGIE M2M.

Jeremy Prince, CEO of Sigfox: “We have had the pleasure of working with ENGIE M2M for the past 6 years in Belgium. They have done a great job deploying the network and accelerating the adoption of Sigfox in this country. We are very excited to see them move towards the next phase with Citymesh. It also illustrates that 0G is a perfect addition to other technologies and that most often we “complete” rather than “compete”! We warmly congratulate all parties and look forward to continuing working together as massive IoT is becoming a reality.”

The acquisition is accompanied by the exit of all shareholders. Neither parties are releasing any financial details.

How IoT Is Revolutionizing the Energy Transition

When the Port of Moerdijk had a large wind farm installed at the Southern Netherlands municipality in 2020, operated by Vattenfall, one of the European leaders in green energy, officials realized the turbine towers could serve an additional purpose: hosting an Internet of Things (IoT) network that provides key sensor data to the bustling port 120 meters below.

Kerlink, a specialist in solutions dedicated to the Internet of Things, was selected to provide the gateways for the LoRaWAN® project.

While the 27-megawatt wind farm supplies clean energy to more than 27,000 households in the area, Kerlink Wirnet™ iStation LoRaWAN® gateways receive sensor data and information in a radius of +/- 25 km, or 2,000 km2, and securely transfer it to users in the energy-efficient IoT network. In addition to monitoring air quality, including CO2 emissions, sensors are used for monitoring water levels and open or closed bridges and gates around the port, which helps traffic move efficiently and reduces emissions.

In addition, the industrial-grade IoT network will be available near the port for shipping, rail and other companies, as well as municipalities, government agencies and individuals, at low cost.

Kerlink Gateways Power IoT Network Piggybacking on Wind Turbines 100 Meters Above Dutch PortKerlink’s wind-powered outdoor gateways will run entirely on green electricity. Remy de Jong Sr., from SkyLab BV, which specializes in installing IoT gateways, said the advantage of the height is that the signal is stronger and reaches further.

“With these great results, we expect to expand the public Internet of Things into the wind industry, for example for on- and off-shore wind turbines. We usually do that on high buildings and towers,” he added.

“When we entered into talks with Port of Moerdijk, we got the idea during a brainstorm of using the wind-farm towers. Installing a gateway on a windmill – we have never done that before in the Netherlands, and to my knowledge, it hasn’t been done this way anywhere in the world.”

The project is Kerlink’s second major deployment in the Netherlands. In 2019, it was part of a joint deployment of a LoRaWAN® private IoT network at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, one of the largest international airports in Europe.

Aurélien Seugnet, Kerlink’s business developer, said:

“Kerlink Wirnet iStation IoT gateways are operating 100 meters above the water in what will be an exposed and challenging environment, but this product has repeatedly proven its robust performance and reliability. Being wind powered also is a key benefit, because they will be out of reach for battery replacements.”
