Telematics and fleet management forge ahead in Brazilian M2M market

New regulations in Brazil result in a surge for the telematics and fleet management sector in the Brazilian machine-to-machine (M2M) market, finds new report by Pyramid.

Telematics and fleet management will be the most dynamic sector in the M2M market in Brazil, rising in value from US$934 million in 2014 to $1.8 billion in 2019, at a 14.5% CAGR. Regulations are the key growth trigger for the telematics and fleet managements sector in Brazil, which will account for 49% of total M2M revenue five years from now. This is largely due to a new legislation which was introduced by the Brazilian government in mid-2013. The law demands that 20% of new vehicles have to be equipped with M2M devices by the end of 2013; a figure which will rise to 40% by August 2014 and 100% by the end of 2014.

According to the Sao Paulo Transport Union, 1,256 vehicles are stolen every day in Brazil, translating into over 450,000 stolen cars per year. The majority of stolen vehicles are likely to be taken to neighbouring markets such as Paraguay and Bolivia, a huge cost to insurance companies and consumers. In order to reduce vehicle theft and minimise the impact on users, Brazil’s State Traffic Department (DENATRAN) implemented the SIMRAV Program in 2013. The program establishes that all value chain participants, including equipment vendors, system integrators, and mobile service providers must be certified by DENATRAN, forcing the development of a formal M2M ecosystem for the telematics and fleet management sector in Brazil. According to Daniel Ramos, senior analyst at Pyramid,

“Policy and government initiatives are the key triggers for getting M2M services off the ground. Adoption of regulations in large markets such as Brazil will have a domino effect on the rest of Latin America.”

The big winners in the Brazilian M2M market

Telefónica and América Móvil stand atop the rest of Brazil’s mobile operators when it comes to M2M profits.

Ramos says:
“Both companies have taken an early lead in the M2M market in Latin America. Their strategy has focused on building their M2M capabilities in the larger markets first, but we believe they will export their successful M2M initiatives to other markets in the region in the near future.”

Although Telefónica and América Móvil will likely gain the most from the government regulations in Brazil, Pyramid expects competition to intensify as other mobile operators launch M2M offerings and pure-play mobile virtual operators, such as Porto Seguro and Vodafone, enter the fray.

Ramos adds:
“It is high time for mobile operators to assess the M2M market opportunity by developing strategic alliances with technology vendors such as Jasper Technologies or Axeda, a PTC business, to increase revenue opportunities and protect their customer base.”

Wyless and Getrak partner to offer managed connectivity bundled with cloud telematics across South America

Wyless, the leading end-to-end service provider for M2M and IoT, and Getrak, the leading provider of horizontal cloud based tracking solutions to the fleet and telematics markets in Brazil, today announced a broad partnership agreement with Wyless Brazil subsidiary Wyless TM Data.

Together, the companies will offer a fully managed end-to-end solution for device, cloud and managed connectivity across all four mobile operators in Brazil and rapidly expanding to other markets and operators in South America.

The partnership is aimed at creating simplicity and cost savings for Getrak customers, that together manage over 250,000 vehicles in the Brazilian market, by providing a one-stop shop for device, cloud and network services.

Getrak telematics solutionFrederico Menegatti, CEO of Getrak, said:

“We want to generate more value to the services we provide to our customers by helping them save costs significantly through traffic data management tools and multi-network capability such as the Wyless Porthos platform. Together with Wyless we will offer Getrak customers a full end-to-end solution for managed telematics services.”

“Wyless mission of enabling freedom for Internet of Things is to offer simple bundled solutions together with partners like Getrak, and we are excited that this partnership will increase both our respective market shares in the rapidly growing Brazilian M2M and IoT markets as a consequence of our work and alignment,” says Sergio Souza, CEO of Wyless TM Data.

“By offering advanced tools for monitoring and reporting usage, supply chain management services and dedicated account management, which today’s MNOs in Brazil find difficult, if not impossible to provide, we will bring unprecedented efficiencies to Getrak customers, who are the leading telematics providers in Brazil.”

According to the International Data Corporation consulting firm (IDC), the Brazilian M2M market has already reached $2 billion dollars in 2014 and telematics services account for nearly 40% of the M2M market. The expansion and popularization of the Internet of Things (IoT) is just being made possible because of the spread of mobile broadband and the reduction in the taxation of mobile telecom services. Together Wyless and Getrak are well poised to take significant market share across Brazil and neighboring markets.

Brazilian Industry Trends To Possibly Drive M2M Market

Guest post by LeadingQuest.

Brazil has the fifth largest population in the world and with new tax cuts on M2M terminals recently enforced, Brazil is arguably the next biggest M2M market.

With new industry trends taking off in Brazil, there is no doubt the market can grow dramatically in the next couple of years.

One of the major trends in Brazil is Telehealth services. According to reports from BMI, major investors have been eying Brazil as as a potential for Telecare services. One of the country’s biggest mobile operators acquired Axismed, a Brazilian chronic care management company. This aims to provide digital healthcare services such as health monitoring, outpatient care and self care applications. Axismed reported that their services has reduced cost of care for chronic patients by 30 percent both for health care providers and private companies. Another project launched in line with Telecare services is GE Healthcare’s Urban eHealth Project. This project provides medical practitioners access to various tools that will help them measure patient welfare. Clinicians are also given access to a portable that they can carry around that they can work with necessary devices. This project was undertaken primarily in Santa Marta favela in Rio de Janeiro.

Other developments such as Axismed’s biometric data transmission via connected devices at the patient’s homes is supported by Telefonica Digital. This initiative is aimed at greatly reducing the cost of clinicians and physicians trying to gather data from patients. It also saves time for them as patients may no longer need to go to clinics in order to provide information. PwC, an international professional services provider, reported that telehealth application development market in Brazil could reach $46.6 million in 2015. Meantime, GSMA also highlighted that these projects can aid over 45 million Brazilians and save about $14.1 billion in unnecessary healthcare costs.

Other trends in the region include mobile commerce, Telecom infrastructure investments and more MVNO developments in 2014. E-commerce has been increasingly flourishing market. However, mobile carriers are now venturing into bringing m-commerce introducing new mobile commerce platforms that will allow customers to pay their bills, make purchases, transfer funds and make cash withdrawals. In 2013, a joint initiative of Banco Bradesco and Claro introduced a pilot mobile payment system called My Money Claro. This will initially be available in select cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Bellford Roxo, Sao Joano de Meriti, Duque de Caxias and Goiania. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs and Pátria Investimentos, along with six other investors will help in the construction of telecommunication towers. The two towers will cost about $320 to $820 million. The completion of this project will attract more investors in and outside of Brazil and the region will largely benefit from it. Currently, Brazil has approximately 61,000 telecommunication towers and still requires 6,680 new ones to improve network coverage and services. And a new MVNO business model is also set to be transplanted into the market. Brazilian mobile operators are still holding discussions over the new platform and expects to close the deal hopefully in the near future.

Clovis Lacerda, CEO of LeadingQuest and Parlacom, one of the major M2M solution providers in Brazil, believes that these major trends in the region only marks the beginning of the much anticipated growth of the M2M market in Brazil. He said that as the telehealth services expand in Brazil, more medical service providers and companies will recognize its benefits, especially on how this can bring down the cost. Installing devices and health monitoring equipment in a patient’s home which physicians can remotely monitor, will surely save not only millions of money but also millions of lives. This is something that M2M players like Parlacom, are very eager to see grow rapidly in the next few years.
Lacerda eagerly said:

“There is no doubt that eHealth will surely drive revenue for the M2M market in Brazil.”

He further noted that as Brazil strengthens its telecommunications network by adding more towers, it will likely boost the M2M market as well.

“Mobility and connectivity are two very important aspects of M2M communication. The towers will not only provide better connections and better coverage for mobile devices but will also add more flexibility to our solutions”, Lacerda said.

GSMA Welcomes Brazilian Government Decision to Reduce Machine-to-Machine Taxation

Appropriate Regulatory Framework Will Allow Developing M2M Market to Flourish.

The GSMA welcomes the Brazilian government’s decision to pass regulation reducing taxation on machine-to-machine (M2M) devices. The move, which was announced by Brazil’s Communications Minister Paulo Bernardo and signed by President Dilma Rousseff, will significantly reduce the SIM card tax on M2M devices, providing a stimulus for operators to develop services, such as smart metering, car tracking or remote health monitoring.

Tom Phillips, Chief Regulatory Officer, GSMA, said:

“President Rouseuff’s decision to reduce this taxation is a significant move to stimulate the growth of M2M services and should be recognised by other markets as a very positive and forward-looking move.”

Containers in Brazil“M2M is a new market whose growth should be encouraged by government policies of low taxation and light-touch regulation. Countries like Brazil that encourage the growth of M2M services will be the first to benefit from the social, environmental and economic opportunities of this important new sector.”

The decree will cut two fees in the Telecommunications Inspection Fund (FISTEL) – the Installation Inspection Tax (TFI), which is charged when a SIM is first activated and the Operation Inspection Fee (TFF), an annual charge on each active SIM. This equates to a combined reduction of 80 per cent.

There are approximately 8.7 million M2M connections (source: GSMA Intelligence) currently active in Brazil, a figure that is expected to grow exponentially following this decision. The GSMA recently released a report called ‘The Mobile Economy Latin America’ that predicted 84 million M2M connections by 2017.

Brazilian Industry Trends To Possibly Drive M2M Market

Brazil put into effect a regulation to reduce taxes for machine-to-machine (M2M) devices approved by President Dilma Rousseff in September 2012.

The regulatory decree was published in Brazil’s federal gazette Diário Oficial da União. The measure cuts the installation inspection fee TFI – paid by operators for each active terminal as part of the telecommunications fund Fistel – from 26.8 reais (US$12.2) to 5.68 reais.

The operation inspection fee (TFF), meanwhile, will be reduced to 1.89 reais from 8.94 reais. TFF is charged to carriers annually for each active telecommunications chip. All cuts are specifically aimed at M2M terminals. Smart grid, smart metering, car tracking, remote health monitoring are some of the most common M2M applications being considered by the initiative.

The country’s communications ministry MiniCom announced in a statement that the regulation will not impact the 2014 fiscal budget. TFF and TFI fees are scheduled to be collected in March of next year. For 2015, authorities estimate a loss of around 110mn reais as a result of the tax breaks.

Brazil has currently 8.48mn M2M connections, for a 3.11% share of the mobile telecommunications market, according to February data from telecoms regulator Anatel.

Communications minister Paulo Bernardo according to the release, said:

“By 2016, with the [tax] exemptions, we estimate that the number of M2M devices should increase from 17.5mn to 23.3mn, up 33%.”

The tax benefits are also aimed at fixing a distortion that was preventing the development of M2M communication systems in Brazil, MiniCom said. Although M2M terminals are usually cheaper than mobile devices and generate lower revenues than cellphone plans, they were taxed similarly.

The decree signed by Rousseff in 2012 also foresaw the creation of an agency to manage the tax concessions and to boost the development of the segment.

Brazilian Company Launches Tracking Device for Lost Luggage

Recominte’s revolutionary solution uses Telit modules to locate baggage even when dispatched on airplanes.

Recominte, a leader in the aeronautic industry, announced today thatTelit Wireless Solutions, a leading global vendor of high-quality machine-to-machine (M2M) modules, value-added services and solutions, is the M2M module supplier for the Tracer Tag, a high-tech portable tracking device. Recominte’s revolutionary solution is capable of tracking luggage both on the ground and in transit.

The Tracer Tag addresses a growing issue for airlines and their passengers. Last year, according to a report by SITA, the number of mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers was 6.96 — or 21.8 million mishandled bags worldwide in 2013. Delayed and lost luggage cost the industry more than US$2 billion last year alone. Despite several improvements, passengers with at least one connection are the most likely to arrive without their bag. Almost half of all delayed or lost bags come from transfer flights.

Until now, the use of tracking devices to tackle this problem has been tricky due to strict airplane legislation and regulation for electronic and wireless communication devices. Recominte’s solution was designed to address these concerns by automatically shutting itself off when flying and turning itself back on when on the ground. Tracer Tag incorporates the Telit’s GL865-QUAD and JN3 modules to provide its best-in-class tracking solution.

The Telit GL865-QUAD is a GSM/GPRS module that comes with 4 GSM bands for global applications. With its ultra-compact design and extended temperature range, the Telit GL865-QUAD product is the perfect platform for high-volume m2m applications and mobile data devices. Additional features such as integrated TCP/IP protocol stack and serial multiplexer extend functionality of the application at no additional cost. The Telit JN3 is a GPS module that can be easily bundled with other Telit modules to provide a cost–effective, complete tracking solution. The combination of GPS with cellular connectivity supports a solution capable of tracking with maximum sensitivity even in challenging environments like indoors, garages and urban canyons — making it ideal for use inside a bag transported by car, train, bus or plane.

Tracer Tag is small and portable, with a battery life lasting up to 100 hours under good GPS reception conditions. The solution is also extremely robust and passed through nine resistance tests (MIL-STD-810G Standard), proving it can endure vibration, shock, extended temperature range, high humidity and low atmospheric pressure. Tracer Tag can also record any sudden falls and ambient temperature, important factors to determine where a possible damage to the baggage or cargo may have occurred, and essential when sensitive goods are involved such as electronic devices or perishable medicines.

“Telit offers the broadest range of modules on the market today,” said Paulo Schiphorst, CTO of the Tracer Tag project. “Their technology made Tracer Tag possible.”

According to Ricardo Buranello, director for Telit Latin America:

“The solution provided by Recominte is a fine example of demand meeting ingenuity. Tracer Tag is a game changer and has the potential to achieve global success.”

South America Smart Grid Market: $49.8bn by 2023

Two-thirds of electricity generation in South America comes from renewable hydropower, giving it one of the cleanest power sectors in the world. However, there are major problems with electric transmission and distribution infrastructure.

A distribution loss rate of 15.5% is the highest in the world due to pervasive electricity theft and power outages are a continuing problem. As a result, an increasing share of electricity infrastructure spending is being allocated to smart grid investments that can help solve the numerous problems plaguing the region.

Northeast smart grid forecast chart

Source: Northeast Group

Smart grid expenditure will cumulatively reach $49.8 billion by 2023, according to a new study released today by Northeast Group, LLC. This spending will be allocated across the five segments of advanced metering infrastructure (or “smart meters”), distribution automation, wide area measurement, home energy management and information technology. The bulk of the spending will be in distribution automation ($23.2bn), followed closely by smart metering ($19bn with 80.7m meters).

According to Ben Gardner, president of Northeast Group:

“South America stands to achieve some of the largest benefits from smart grid infrastructure among all emerging markets.”

“When we released our first South America study two years ago, there was a lot of potential but limited activity. Since then, several countries have drafted smart grid roadmaps, launched numerous pilot projects and vendor activity has accelerated across the region.”

“Brazil is the leader, but other countries also have made large strides. Ecuador is aiming for full smart meter deployment by 2017, Colombia and Peru are finalizing roadmaps and Chile is developing smart city pilots. Established smart grid vendors are positioning themselves for this huge potential market and new players are entering the sector, such as telecom operators eager to expand their machine-to-machine (M2M) market offerings.”

Telefónica Vivo partners with Sascar for fleet management in Brazil

The companies will exploit synergies to offer products that generate cost savings and improve efficiencies to a target market of five million light vehicles.

Telefónica Digital today announces that it has chosen Sascar, a leader in vehicle monitoring and management of transport operations in the Brazilian market, as its partner to develop fleet management solutions for light vehicles in Brazil. The partnership has been approved by CADE (Conselho Administrativo de Defesa Econômica), that regulates competition in Brazil.

Targeting a potential market of five million light vehicles, the companies will develop digital solutions that enable customers to manage their vehicle fleets, generating impressive cost savings and also improvements in productivity, security and sustainability.

The main targets of the partnership will be fleets of sales teams, technical engineers, service providers of utilities companies, such as light, water and telecommunications, and delivery fleets, amongst others.

Both companies will offer the solutions under the Vivo brand. The partnership combines Sascar’s technology, national coverage and expertise in fleet management with Vivo’s commercial strength, along with a business customer base of more than 300.000 companies.

Roberto Della Piazza, executive director of digital services at Telefónica Vivo, says:

“With this partnership, Telefónica Vivo demonstrates its ability to answer customer needs in the growing M2M market. We are sure that, with Sascar, we will offer the best fleet management service for light vehicles.”

Piazza adds that there are similar partnerships in other countries, as part of Telefónica’s global M2M strategy. This initiative joins several others to give Vivo a leading position in the Brazilian M2M market.

We are very excited with this partnership, the first in Brazilian market. Besides the market opportunity we have, we are proud to be chosen by Vivo after a long contest with other players. We believe this is a recognition of the heavy investments, of more than R$ 20 million, we recently made in technology and innovation. This shows we are on the right path,” says Marcio Tabatchnik Trigueiro, Sascar’s president.
