The Eclipse Foundation Announces The Release of Sparkplug 3.0 and Unveils it is Being Fast Tracked to Become an International Standard

The Sparkplug specification that enables a “Plug n Play” Industrial Internet of Things Poised to become an Official ISO/IEC Standard.

The Eclipse Foundation, one of the world’s largest open source software foundations, in collaboration with the Eclipse Sparkplug Working Group, today announced the release of the Sparkplug 3.0 specification.

Sparkplug is an open software specification that enables mission-critical operational technology (“OT”) clients to use industry standards, including MQTT, to seamlessly integrate data from their applications, sensors, devices, and gateways with most Industrial Internet Of Things (IIoT) Infrastructure. The Sparkplug 3.0 specification represents the first version of the specification managed under the Eclipse Foundation specification process. It also represents the proper formalization of the specification over the v2.2 release.

The goals for Sparkplug 3.0 are to leverage the Eclipse Foundation’s open and vendor-neutral specification process to clarify ambiguities in the v2.2 version and add explicit normative statements while maintaining backward compatibility. In addition, the Sparkplug specification has begun the process of transposition as an international standard at ISO/IEC, an independent, non-governmental international organization with a membership of 167 national standards bodies. To support this standardization effort, the Eclipse Foundation has obtained the status of Publicly Available Specification (PAS) submitter from ISO/IEC’s Joint Technology Committee (JTC) 1. The PAS process is a fast-track process enabling a specification to be approved as an ISO/IEC standard in less than a year, as opposed to a full-length process that can take up to four years. Already growing quickly, Sparkplug’s transition to approved industry standard specification should further speed its growth and acceptance throughout multiple industries.

“Today’s release of Sparkplug 3.0 represents a major milestone,” said Mike Milinkovich, executive director for the Eclipse Foundation.

“This march to Sparkplug’s transformation into an official industry standard has come from significant industry-wide collaboration that continues under the auspices of the Sparkplug Working Group. We look forward to continuing to foster new partnerships to advance the adoption of MQTT and Sparkplug in the industry.”

The Sparkplug Working Group is simultaneously launching a product compatibility program for Sparkplug implementers. The program will ensure that Sparkplug-compatible products and implementations demonstrate a high degree of compatibility and interoperability.

About Sparkplug & MQTT

Sparkplug provides an open and freely available specification for how Edge of Network (EoN) gateways or native MQTT-enabled end devices and MQTT Applications communicate bi-directionally within an MQTT Infrastructure. It is recognized that MQTT is used across a wide spectrum of application solution use cases and an almost indefinable variation of network topologies.

By design, the MQTT specification does not dictate a Topic Namespace or any payload encoding. However, as the IIoT and other architectures leveraging the publisher/subscriber model are adopted by device OEMs in the industrial sector, having different Topic Namespace and payload encoding can inhibit interoperability for the end customer. To that end, the Sparkplug specification addresses the following components within an MQTT infrastructure:

  • Sparkplug defines an OT-centric Topic Namespace.
  • Sparkplug defines an OT-centric Payload definition optimized for industrial process variables.
  • Sparkplug defines MQTT Session State management required by real-time OT SCADA systems.

Eclipse Leshan open source project provides production ready implementation of new IoT device management standard.

The Eclipse IoT Working Group, a collaborative working group of the Eclipse Foundation, is pleased to announce the Eclipse Leshan open source project will support the newly ratified Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) LightweightM2M (LwM2M) 1.0 device management standard.

LwM2M has become an important Internet of Things (IoT) standard for managing low power and lightweight devices that are common for IoT solutions.

Eclipse Leshan is a Java based implementation of the LwM2M standard. It provides a LwM2M server implementation that can be incorporated into any IoT platform or solution. Eclipse Leshan incorporates some of the core IoT functionality required for device management, including access control, device connectivity, firmware update, location, and connectivity statistics.

Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation, explains:

“A key strategy of the Eclipse IoT community has been to provide open source implementations of IoT standards. Therefore, we are thrilled about our close collaboration with the OMA to provide an open source implementation of LwM2M.”

“Eclipse Leshan’s production quality code will be available soon after the specification has been ratified.”

Eclipse Leshan has been in development since 2014. The project code has been downloaded over 30,000 times. The project is led by developers from Sierra Wireless and includes contributions from over 25 developers. Companies active in the Leshan community include Sierra Wireless, Bosch Software Innovations and many others.

A new milestone release of Eclipse Leshan 1.0, supporting the LwM2M 1.0 specification, was made available this week.

Eclipse Simplifies Development of Internet of Things (IoT) Solutions with Open IoT Stack for Java

Open source technology will enable 9 million Java developers to build IoT solutions.

The Eclipse IoT community is making it easier for Java developers to connect and manage devices in an IoT solution by delivering an Open IoT Stack for Java. Based on open source and open standards, the Open IoT Stack for Java simplifies IoT development by allowing developers to re-use a core set of frameworks and services in their IoT solutions.

Why It Matters:

  • The Internet of Things is a tremendous opportunity for organizations and developers to create new solutions that connect devices to the Internet.
  • The complexity of creating IoT solutions makes it difficult for developers to deliver new innovative solutions. The current state requires developers to create proprietary and closed solutions that are locked into a particular vendor, don’t easily interoperate, and are slow to deliver.
  • There are a number of emerging IoT standards (MQTT, CoAP, Lightweight M2M) that will make it possible for devices to connect and interoperate. Open source implementations of these standards will make it easier for developers to adopt these standards.
  • There are 9 million Java developers that will bridge the world between enterprise and embedded development. Providing open source Java frameworks and services will make it easier for Java to become a language for IoT.
  • Similar to the way the Internet evolved to run on an open source foundation (Apache, Linux, etc), the IoT’s success will hinge on the establishment of open source technologies at its core that everyone can use to enable connectivity and interoperability.

The Details:

  • The Eclipse Open IoT Stack for Java is a set of Java frameworks and OSGi services that make it easy to connect and manage IoT solutions. The Open IoT Stack for Java includes support for 1) popular IoT standards: OASIS MQTT, IETF CoAP and OMA Lightweight M2M (LWM2M), and 2) a set of services for building IoT Gateways.
  • A new version of Eclipse Kura 1.0 will be released at JavaOne. Eclipse Kura 1.0 provides a set of Java and OSGi service for building IoT Gateways.
  • A new project called Eclipse Leshan will be announced at JavaOne to support LWM2M. Leshan will provide a Java implementation of the LWM2M server.
  • In addition to the core Open IoT Stack, a set of industrial frameworks are available to accelerate the process of creating home automation and SCADA factory automation solutions.
  • The Open IoT Stack for Java is supported by a large community of companies, universities and research institutions, including: 2lemetry, Actuate, Bitreactive, Cisco, Deutsche Telekom, DC-Square, Eurotech, ibh Systems, IBM, LAAS-CNRS, openHAB, Ubuntu, Sierra Wireless, and 2lemetry.

Eclipse M2M Initiative Gains Momentum with New Projects, Members and Commercial Adoption

The Eclipse Foundation is pleased to announce that the Eclipse M2M Working Groupcontinues to make significant progress in establishing an open source software ecosystem for Machine-2-Machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) development.

Eclipse M2M has added new open source projects, new releases of existing projects, new members, and new product announcements from member companies.

M2M, which deals with connecting different types of machines and devices via a network, is one of the fastest growing technology segments – by some estimates approaching $100 billion. This new technology segment presents a number of software development challenges due to the complexity of the hardware and network architectures, lack of open standards, and issues of interoperability between vertical solutions.

The Eclipse M2M Working Group is a collaboration of companies and organizations focused on developing open source protocols, frameworks, and tools for M2M software development. The goal of the Eclipse M2M Working Group is to make it easy for software developers to create M2M applications that are based on open standards and open source technology. Eclipse M2M has three existing open source projects – Koneki, Mihini, and Paho – that provide open source technology for M2M developers.

New M2M Projects
Four new open source projects are being proposed to join the Eclipse M2M community:

  1. Ponte is a framework that will allow reading and writing of data from sensors and actuators via M2M protocols, accessible via a REST API. Ponte will also provide the ability to convert and exchange data between protocols. The initial protocols that will be supported include MQTT (a proposed OASIS standard) and CoAP (Constrained Application Protocol). Eclipse Paho hosts the reference implementation of MQTT.
  2. Eclipse SCADA is an open source implementation of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system typically used to monitor and control large scale industrial processes, e.g. solar farms. Eclipse SCADA will provide connectivity to a variety of industrial devices, a monitoring system to create alarms and events, recording of historical data and a framework to build custom user interfaces and visualizations on top of those functions.
  3. Concierge is an implementation of the OSGi core specifications that is well suited for embedded and mobile devices. Concierge will target a footprint with a jar file size of less than 400KB, allowing it to run on devices that have limited resources.
  4. Kura is a Java and OSGi based application framework for M2M service gateways. Kura will provide a set of common services for Java developers building M2M applications, including I/O access, data services, network configuration and remote management.

Project Updates and Contributions
The existing Eclipse M2M projects continue to develop and release open source software for M2M developers. Some key new features and contribution for these projects include the following:

  • Mihini
The initial code contribution, provided by Sierra Wireless, is now available for Mihini. Mihini, a Lua-based framework for M2M gateways, provides connectivity management to ensure reliable network connection, provides an abstraction layer for underlying hardware and protocols, and enables the smart transmission of data between devices and servers.
  • Paho
Paho provides open source implementations of the proposed OASIS MQTT protocol. In the last six months Paho has received community contributions for MQTT client implementations in Python, JavaScript, and Objective-C.
  • Koneki
Koneki is a Lua-based IDE with its first official 1.0 production release included as part of Kepler, the annual Eclipse release train. Koneki 1.0 featured updated support for the new Lua 5.2 runtime and new remote development support for the Mihini framework.

Commercial Adoption of Eclipse M2M projects
A number of new product announcements from leading M2M companies have included Eclipse M2M technology.

  • Sierra Wireless AirVantage M2M Cloud platform has recently announced support for the Mihini framework that allows users to build applications running on open hardware, such as Raspberry Pi, which connect with the Sierra Wireless AirVantage Cloud Platform.
  • The Sierra Wireless AirLink GX and LS series Intelligent Gateways use Mihini and Koneki as part of the ALEOS Application Framework that supports rapid development of embedded M2M applications
  • The recently launched IBM MessageSight offering is a new messaging appliance designed for M2M and mobile environments. It is capable of supporting millions of concurrent sensors or smart devices and can scale up to 13 million messages per second. MessageSight supports the MQTT protocol and MQTT clients from Eclipse Paho. Sprint is the first mobile carrier to adopt IBM MessageSight and is using the technology to deliver advanced connected car services.
  • Eurotech Everyware Cloud 3.0 platform allows for device-independent M2M applications to connect sensors and devices with back-end business processes and reports. Everyware Cloud 3.0 includes MQTT support from Eclipse Paho and is based on the technology proposed in the Eclipse Kura project.
  • The Axeda Machine Cloud ® supports open source protocol standards including Eclipse Paho. Axeda Ready Gateways can now support MQTT networks by listening to any MQTT broker. This allows for support of local MQTT sensor and device networks as well as connectivity between MQTT device networks and the Axeda Machine Cloud.

New Members of the Eclipse M2M Working Group
IBH Systems GmbH has joined the Eclipse M2M working group. IBH provides software solutions and consulting with focus on the oil and gas and renewable energy industry. Their employees are also the founders of the Eclipse SCADA project.

IBH will join the existing members of the working group: Axeda, Eurotech, IBM, and Sierra Wireless.

Eclipse M2M Industry Working Group MovesToward Open M2M Tools and Frameworks

The Eclipse M2M Industry Working Group (IWG) was established in November 2011 as an industry collaboration with the purpose of creating an open platform of tools and frameworks to simplify the creation of M2M and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

The goal of the group is to break down the silos that often occur between M2M applications and enable interoperability among different M2M devices, M2M servers, and enterprise applications.

After six months, the participants have made substantial progress toward making available the open source technology to support this mission.

  • Java and C/C++ source code for the MQTT client reference implementation is now available as part of the Eclipse Paho project. MQTT is an M2M connectivity protocol that is useful for connections between small devices over low bandwidth networks. The Eclipse Paho project provides the reference implementation for the MQTT protocol. A contribution of an MQTT client implementation in the Lua language has also been proposed by Andy Gelme.
  • The source code for a new M2M application framework has been made available. The purpose of this framework is to provide a consistent workflow for M2M development, and to allow M2M applications to interact with different device types and communication protocols. Creating a consistent framework will enable interoperability and information sharing between M2M applications.
  • The Eclipse Koneki project has made available a Lua development tools environment and an integrated simulator for the OMA-DM protocol. Lua is a popular programming language for embedded and M2M development. Koneki provides Lua developers with an Eclipse-based IDE similar to what is available to Java and C/C++ developers. OMA-DM is a device management protocol. The new OMA-DM simulator allows developers to test interactions between a simulated M2M device running in Eclipse, and an OMA-DM server.

The Eclipse M2M Industry Working Group is open to participation by any individual or organization working on M2M solutions. The current active participants include Band XI, Eurotech, IBM, and Sierra Wireless.

Sierra Wireless, IBM, Eurotech, and the Eclipse Foundation establish an M2M Industry Working Group to ease the development, testing, and deployment of machine-to-machine solutions.

Sierra Wireless and the Eclipse Foundation today announced the formation of a new Industry Working Group to define and implement an open standard platform for the software development tools used in developing machine-to-machine (M2M) communications applications.

IBM and Eurotech are also founding members of the M2M Industry Working Group, which is open to any organization with an interest in M2M solutions, including both vendors and potential clients.

M2M communications represents an exciting and challenging opportunity to positively impact the way our world operates in fields as varied as energy management, transportation, and healthcare,” said Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation.

“We believe the formation of this M2M Industry Working Group comes at a critical time. The open source contributions of M2M tools and protocols will help to reduce development time and costs, and ensure that mission critical systems maintain interoperability as deployments evolve over the lifetime of a project.”

The market for M2M solutions is growing, but rapid growth is hindered by incompatible platforms and protocols that require developers to continually reinvent solutions that have already been created. This situation slows innovation and creates maintenance and upgrade problems as deployments evolve over time. The founding members of the Industry Working Group believe the creation of open tools, open protocols, open interfaces and open application programming interfaces (APIs) are the best approach to addressing these problems, bringing tremendous value to the M2M ecosystem.

The Eclipse Machine-to-Machine Industry Working Group and the related open source projects will enable customers to integrate physical world systems into their enterprise solutions,” said Dr. Angel Diaz, vice president, software standards, IBM Software Group.

Data is being captured today as never before, the Eclipse M2M initiative helps expand the spectrum of information and intelligence into the systems and processes that make the world work and become a smarter planet.

The M2M Industry Working Group is the umbrella for M2M-related Eclipse projects for open source, the first of which is the Koneki project. The goal of Koneki is to provide M2M solution developers with tools that ease the development, simulation, testing/debugging and deployment of such solutions. The initial open source contributions provide a common set of tools and APIs that simplify development of solutions across multiple environments (such as Linux, Java, and proprietary environments such as Open AT® from Sierra Wireless), as well as standard communications protocols. The benefit to M2M customers is more flexibility, with systems that are interoperable and don’t lock them into a long-term relationship with a single solution vendor. Sierra Wireless has made the first significant contribution to the Koneki project, providing a full-featured embedded development environment for the Lua programming language.

We consider it critically important to provide the M2M developer community with the tools and support needed to deploy applications as efficiently as possible, and ensure that they can be easily maintained over time. Because of this, we have been developing Eclipse-based tools for many years,” said Emmanuel Walckenaer, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Solutions and Services for Sierra Wireless.

This collaboration with the Eclipse Foundation and our other working group partners is an extension of our commitment to build an open M2M ecosystem, not only for the benefit of our customers, but also for the long-term development of the industry.
