Tele2 and foodora in revolutionary collaboration – connected drones deliver food from the sky to the doorstep

Tele2 AB (“Tele2”) and the q-trade platform foodora announce today that they will launch food deliveries using IoT and 5G connected drones.

The deliveries will be made wherever possible to the customers’ property or garden and lowered with a cable from the drone, with the first deliveries taking place already in the spring on Värmdö, outside Stockholm.

Now launching foodora Air, which is a fleet of electric drones that, with the help of 5G technology from Tele2, will provide fast and efficient delivery service of food from a number of restaurants on Värmdö, outside Stockholm. Aerit, a technology leader in the drone industry, has developed advanced drones integrated into foodora’s technology platform to create a seamless and efficient delivery experience connected with the latest 5G technology from Tele2.

Stefan Trampus, Executive Vice President B2B at Tele2, says:

“This marks a new era in how people receive deliveries, and we believe we can see more applications in other industries. For us at Tele2, the partnership with foodora is a perfect example of how we can use our 5G connectivity and expertise to drive future delivery services in a simple, sustainable, and smart way, while providing customers with an extraordinary experience.”

The drones have a range of 21 kilometers and emit 2 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer, which can be compared to traditional gasoline or diesel-powered delivery vehicles that emit 143 and 110 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer, respectively.

“Technology and connectivity have the potential to break many of the limitations that currently exist in rural areas, where access to various services and products has decreased in line with rapid urbanization,” Stefan Trampus concludes.

Deliveries will, where possible, be made directly to customers’ properties or gardens and lowered with a cable from the air. Deliveries will commence in May on Värmdö, and food can be ordered through the foodora app. The goal is to expand to more areas in Sweden so that more locations can have access to the same service available in major cities.

“We are proud to be the first in Europe to launch real drone deliveries, and we are excited to have Tele2 and Aerit as partners on this exciting journey. Fast home deliveries are a democratic issue, in my opinion. Regardless of where you are in the country, it should be possible to quickly get what you need, such as medicines or groceries. It should not only be available to people who have chosen to settle in big cities,” concludes Daniel Gustafsson Raba, Director Operations at foodora.

Tele2 will provide continuous connectivity for the drones based on 5G IoT (Internet of Things) technology. Drones require both short response times and the ability to send and receive large amounts of data to handle deliveries safely, supported by 5G.

Technical information foodora Air:

  • Maximum range: 21 kilometers
  • Maximum delivery range: 12 kilometers
  • Maximum delivery weight: 4 kilograms
  • Weather capacity: Can fly in rain, wind, and snow

Tele2 Launches VoLTE Globally for IoT Customers

Tele2 IoT launches international rollout of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services, which will provide the voice call technology required by our customers to operate voice calls in the 4G network globally.

As 2G and 3G are sunsetting across the globe, and everything connected to these old networks stops working, it is important to provide options for IoT customers using traditional voice services. The rollout of VoLTE in Tele2’s Swedish network, as well as in selected networks across the globe, will enable Tele2 IoT customers to use next-generation technology to cater to their voice call needs.

The use of VoLTE will enhance coverage across the globe by seamlessly leveraging efficient future-proof network technology. The launch of VoLTE is also a significant milestone in Tele2’s sustainability efforts, as it will enable IoT-customers to move to the new generation of more energy efficient devices.

“Voice services play an important role in IoT deployments, particularly those having mission-critical applications. Enabling VoLTE for IoT customers marks a significant milestone in our ability to serve our customers’ needs. This launch reflects Tele2’s commitment to excellence and is in line with our vision to enable a society of unlimited possibilities.” says Cyril Deschanel, Managing Director of IoT at Tele2.

VoLTE (Voice over LTE) is a powerful alternative to the current 2G/3G voice service, delivering superior voice clarity, faster data speeds, and extended battery life for IoT devices. With the full launch of VoLTE now complete, this means Tele2 IoT can globally support VoLTE on any SIM provided by Tele2.

Most operators are already in the process of shutting down 3G, with 2G closure not far behind. For Tele2, in Sweden 2G/3G will be fully sunsetted by December 2025, which means it is crucial that devices are ready in good time. Mission-critical applications in healthcare, for example, are particularly dependent on a high-quality voice function.

Tele2 IoT enables electric vehicle wireless charging on the move through a new agreement with Elonroad

Tele2 IoT is taking a step forward in the field of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and towards a sustainable automotive industry by providing connection of equipment to Elonroad, which has developed technology for electric roads where electric vehicles can be charged while driving.

Elonroad, a startup based in Lund, Sweden, has developed a solution in the form of an electric road where all kinds of electric vehicles – cars, buses, and trucks – regardless of manufacturer, can be charged while they are driving.

With more and more electric vehicles on the roads, charging while driving will reduce bottlenecks and also enable smaller batteries.

The solution consists of a rail that is integrated with the road by being installed directly on the asphalt. The rails can withstand all weather conditions and short rail segments are driven individually, which provides a high level of safety.

Karin Ebbinghaus, CEO of Elonroad, says:

“Our smart electric road needs to be connected to the internet in order for us to be able to control, optimize, and collect payments from users. The agreement with Tele2 is business-critical for us on our continued journey.”

Through 2CONTROL, Tele2 IoT’s platform for managing connected devices, Elonroad will be able to monitor and manage its IoT subscriptions. Elonroad’s service includes an integrated control system for individual measurement of each vehicle’s usage and can also analyze road conditions, such as where there are potential hazards, which can then be communicated to prevent accidents.

“Elonroad is an exciting startup with a solution that will be critical to achieve the goal of a fossil-independent vehicle fleet by 2030. By making 5G available, we secure Elonroad’s digital solution and ensure a reliable connection. As soon as 5G becomes available where Elonroad builds its electric roads, larger amounts of data that require low latency can e handled, such as the transfer of data from cameras. We are very proud to be a part of Elonroad’s continued journey”, says Stefan Trampus, EVP B2B at Tele2.

Today, foodora and Tele2 are taking a step towards the future of home deliveries. The telecom operator and the Q-commerce* company have entered into a collaboration on a pilot for autonomous droids connected with 5G.

The pilot means that today the droid ‘Doora’ will take its historic first rolling step towards carrying out home deliveries in Stockholm.

Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept now being applied to Swedish home deliveries. IoT means that machines, vehicles, household appliances, and other things are equipped with built-in connected sensors and processors. foodora predicts that the number of home deliveries will increase significantly in the future, which is why foodora is constantly working to find smoother and better solutions adapted to the needs of the future.

By connecting to Tele2’s 5G network, the Doora droid can perceive its surroundings, communicate, and thus create a situation-adapted service – self-driving home deliveries. Doora has a camera that sends information via 5G in real time to foodora, which can track and trace the robot, while quickly sending data to and from Doora.

Stefan Trampus, Executive Vice President, Tele2 B2B and IoT, says:

“It is exciting that we, together with the innovator foodora, can carry out this test and get the opportunity to show the concrete benefits for both consumers and companies with 5G and IoT, such as stability, fast response rates, and higher speeds. With Doora, we really show what we can do with 5G, both now and in the future.”

“foodora is a pioneer in many areas and we are a fast-moving tech company that wants to lead the change forward. It feels exciting to work with a forward-looking company like Tele2 to create an innovative solution for third-generation digital commerce. foodora’s vision is that several hundred Dooras will roll in Sweden in the near future,” says John Denbratt, Chief Logistics Officer, foodora Sweden.

Facts about the test

The Q-commerce droid Doora is being tested around Stureplan in Stockholm today and tomorrow and can transport both food and other products weighing up to 20 kg. The plan is that the pilot together with two players will continue in the spring.

Facts about Doora

  • Speed: 6 km/h
  • Connection: 5G
  • Battery life: 8h
  • Charging time: 4h
  • Manufacturer: Yape

Tele2 and Civil Rights Defenders partner to secure reliable connectivity for human rights defenders’ security alarms globally

Tele2 and Civil Rights Defenders have entered a partnership in which Tele2 provides IoT connectivity to the global security system of Civil Rights Defenders’ Natalia Project, protecting human rights defenders all over the world.

Civil Rights Defenders’ Natalia Project was created in 2013 to promote freedom of speech and protect human right defenders in countries where threats, or even attacks, might be used to silence outspoken voices. In short, each participating human rights defender is provided with security training and a security device that can activate an alarm instantly in situations where the human rights defender faces an immediate threat. The alarm sends a distress signal with a GPS location to nearby local contacts, as well as to Civil Rights Defenders’ headquarters in Stockholm, enabling instant local and global support.

Going forward, Tele2’s IoT connectivity will provide all units in the Natalia Project’s global security system with the best connectivity possible, including roaming in more than 450 networks all over the world.

  • “No tangible change can be achieved when you constantly live in fear of retribution. The Natalia Project has freed me from that fear, so I can amplify the voice of my people knowing that someone is watching over me”, says Phyllis Omido, a Kenyan environmental human rights defender who participates in the Natalia Project.
  • “Tele2 has always been a firm protector of freedom of speech. We have enabled it by providing alternative connectivity, but also fought for it, in many countries over the years. It feels great to support Civil Rights Defenders and the Natalia Project with our high quality and reliable IoT connectivity, to make sure all units ceaselessly provide security and comfort for brave human rights defenders in challenging communities”, says Anders Nilsson, President and CEO of Tele2.
  • “Sadly, there is a growing need to protect outspoken voices, be it from authoritarian states or other powerful offenders. The Natalia Project is a unique global security system that has proven to be absolutely crucial when human rights defenders face immediate danger. Partnering with a reliable supplier of worldwide connectivity for our alarms is therefore a very important step, not only for Civil Rights Defenders, but also for all human rights defenders participating in the project”, says Anders L. Pettersson, Executive Director of Civil Rights Defenders.

Tele2 IoT Helping 9Solutions Provide Nurse Call Systems to Front Line Healthcare Workers

Tele2 IoT is supporting Finland’s 9Solutions to ensure the functionality of healthcare services in exceptional circumstances.

Tele2 IoT will help 9Solutions to bring its Nurse Call Lite solution to the healthcare community.

Tele2 IoT is proud to be a part of helping 9Solutions to bring its Nurse Call Lite solution to the healthcare community. Tele2 IoT will continue to support them in their efforts to enable medical personnel to work in safe and secure environments.

9Solutions has responded to the fight against Covid-19 battle by introducing Nurse Call Lite, an adaption of its Nurse Call solution. Nurse Call Lite offers a ‘plug-n-play’ solution that facilitates communication between nursing staff and patients in a secure and safe way, as well as management of urgent and non-urgent calls from patients. Nurse Call Lite is particularly suited to field hospital environments, as well as hospital hallways, where overflow patients are currently being treated.

The wireless devices are equipped with Tele2 IoT SIMs.

  • “In these challenging times, we all need to help out in any way we can. We are happy to be part of this solution and we hope that it will make a big difference for both patients and healthcare workers“, says Fredrik Stenberg, CEO of Tele2 IoT.
  • Tele2 IoT responded to our connectivity needs within 45 minutes. The response was fast, professional, and the team helped us with whatever we needed, says Sami Herrala, CEO 9Solutions.
  • Equally important was roaming. No one can guarantee that a specific mobile network will be working at any given time or at any particular location, so Tele2 IoT’s roaming solution is incredibly important, Sami Herrala concludes.

9solutions nurse call lite solution

9Solutions is Finland’s leading provider of safety location and communication systems, as well as intelligent care systems. The 9Solutions system is used by more than 1,100 healthcare organizations, including care home, hospitals, and home care.

Tele2 IoT launches a seamless global IoT experience

Tele2 AB, today announced the launch of a new global IoT platform – EnCore.

With EnCore, customers can roll out large global IoT deployments, using high amounts of data, in a flexible and cost-efficient way. EnCore makes it possible to overcome many of the challenges that enterprises face when operating a large deployment of IoT devices on a global scale. Making connectivity easier, faster, smarter, unified, more cost-efficient and with quality of service has driven this development.

For enterprises that have, or are looking to deploy, IoT devices with connectivity on a larger scale, the current solutions on the market have not been working in an optimal way. They are often faced with proprietary solutions, having to administrate multiple operators and platforms for different regions, including local operators for certain countries with regulatory requirements. They’ve also faced difficulties in finding cost-efficient solutions for mid and high data use-cases on a global level.

EnCore has been developed to support the growing amount of solutions that digitalization and the shift toward servitization require and generate. It gives enterprises an efficient way of deploying and operating their devices. It is a solution to the latency issues, the regulatory compliance situation and the high data cost structure that many customers today are challenged by.

EnCore is composed of a cloud based IoT Core network that is deployed as-a-service in the regions and countries required. It has a platform to manage and operate an enterprise’s total IoT deployment. Based on the Nokia WING platform, it also acts as a platform for mobile network operators to cooperate, in order to offer enterprises all the benefits of a local deployment in a global setup.

“As the orchestrator of a smarter world, we aim to launch services that make IoT adoption easier, more efficient and that will improve the customers daily business”, says Melissa Jenkins, CTO of Tele2 IoT. “We identified the need for EnCore a number of years ago and very proud of launching it today”.

“While our other offerings are very suitable for both smaller and larger roll-outs, this is a infrastructure service, an IoT as-a-service offering, that will benefit companies with large global deployments, or with high data usage and specific quality of service requirements. Our strategy to develop open, enduring, and innovative products continues, and EnCore is really a new paradigm in the world of IoT.”

Tele2 first Swedish operator to launch eSIM connectivity through Windows

After a fruitful cooperation with Microsoft, Tele2 is proud to become the first Swedish operator to provide support for the new eSIM technology in Windows based devices. Laptops and tablets with eSIM will be able to connect to internet anywhere, without any additional hardware, directly via the Mobile Plans application preloaded in Windows 10.

Tele2 and Microsoft has cooperated intensively in order to develop everything necessary to offer the new technology. Starting now, laptops with the latest version of Windows 10 and an embedded SIM (eSIM) chip will be able to connect to Tele2’s net anywhere, at any time. The technology is expected to be included in most future laptops and tablets, with an increasing number launching during the second half of 2018.

“This is clearly the next step for a simpler and more connected life. eSIM makes it possible to connect your device to internet anywhere, without the hassle of having to bring additional equipment, tether using your mobile phone, or scout for a WiFi zone”, explains Joacim Rask, Head of Business Development at Tele2.

Long-term, eSIM may even abolish the need for physical SIM-cards completely. And although mobile phones, tablets and computers might seem like the obvious devices for this kind of technology, the possibilities are far from limited to the tools we share information with today.

Joacim Rask, says:

“The kinds of devices with internet connection increase every day. We already see connected cars, glasses, and even dog collars, but nearly everything will be part of the future connected society. Tele2 plays a part in this evolution, as this eSIM cooperation with Microsoft clearly exemplifies.”

The range of laptops and tablets with eSIM chips is still limited on the Swedish market, but is expected to increase rapidly during the coming years. At the same time, Tele2 will continue to develop support for other kind of devices and technologies.

Telit and Tele2 Introduce Telit simWISE - a Module-Software Embedded SIM Technology

New module-software embedded SIM technology significantly reduces time to market, complexity, and total cost of ownership.

Telit and Tele2 global enablers of the Internet of Things (IoT), today announced the introduction of Telit simWISE, a first-of-its-kind cellular module-embedded technology.

The new technology can act as a replacement or complement for manufacturers of cellular-connected devices using traditional SIM card and tray. Manufacturers of connected products that choose to embed Telit IoT modules with this technology can expect reduced manufacturing costs and improved customer experience across all verticals and markets.

The module-software embedded SIM technology is essential to the mass-rollout of Cellular IoT technology, in particular LPWA offerings such as LTE-M and NB-IoT. This initial release of simWISE for mass market 2G devices is the first step in Telit’s roadmap to deliver a broad set of innovative technologies related to embedded connectivity that will expand across the product portfolio. Telit’s ability to offer the industry’s broadest portfolio of both integrated products and services, and Tele2 IoT’s best-in-class connectivity solution, allows the companies for the first time to provide the market with the enhanced value proposition of simWISE that reduces the total cost of ownership and improves the connection lifecycle management features of IoT deployments across the globe.

The technology alleviates several issues in regard to connection lifecycle management of IoT-connected devices:

  • Design constraints and reliability of removable SIM and tray
  • High logistic costs associated with control, stock, and shipping of pre-provisioned SIM cards
  • Significant switching costs created by physical visits to swap SIM cards and network profiles

Alon Segal, CTO of Telit, says:

“As the M2M/IoT market continues to mature, devices will continue to get less expensive and smaller, making it easier for enterprises to harness the business-growing potential of IoT. simWISE is a step in that direction. Removal of the SIM card from product design dramatically reduces the time to market, complexity, and total cost of ownership of IoT devices.”

“We have a strong partnership with Telit from both commercial and technology aspects and we share the same vision about the ecosystem. simWISE will simplify and streamline manufacturing, logistics and onboarding. Tele2 IoT will always be on the frontline of new IoT technologies and solutions,” says Stephen Bryant, CTO of Tele2 IoT.

The benefits of simWISE for users and manufacturers of cellular-connected devices are numerous. Device manufacturers can expect lower total cost of ownership, the ability to quickly swap mobile network operators, improved product reliability, and a single SKU for connected products that can operate on a global scale. Users can expect an improved and streamlined experience that replaces today’s confusing and laborious physical SIM provisioning process.

The first Telit cellular modules to include this technology are the GE910 V3, the GL865 V3/V3.1, and the GE866, which enable reliable, secure, and cost effective GSM/GPRS connectivity.

Solution to prevent diesel theft won the Tele2 IoT Challenge

Yesterday, Tele2 IoT presented the winners of Tele2 IoT Challenge: LPWA.

The competition started in January, when Tele2 IoT decided to let companies experiment with its new LPWA network in Greater Gothenburg to come up with new innovations. The competition had 135 participants from 28 different countries and the winning solution will make it close to impossible for criminals to steal diesel – at least from those who own a GuardPuck.

Out of the incoming contributions, three winners were selected by the jury consisting of representatives from Tele2, Talkpool, PubNub, Microchip, Kerlink, IBM and Giesecke & Devrient. During yesterday’s event, the jury announced the winners where Martin Johannesson, Johan Eliasson and Nils Ingelhag scooped first prize with the idea GuardPuck. The winners received products and services to a value of 150.000 SEK that will help them transform their idea into a working product.

The solution aims to prevent diesel theft from work vehicles, which is a common problem in Sweden with 8.000 reported thefts each year. By placing a “puck” on the vehicle that a customer wants to monitor, the puck will report if it notices an ongoing theft attempt. By gathering vibration and position data in the cloud, Martin says that future thefts also could be predicted and thereby help the police fight crimes. The LPWA technology makes it easier to counter jamming devices usually used by criminals. The puck transmits a signal with regular intervals and the lack of received signals to the server triggers an alarm and notifies the owner. It makes it impossible for thieves to jam the signal or even destroy the puck without an alarm being triggered.

During the award, Tele2 and partners also gave a 2nd prize to Marcus Carlberg from Etteplan with the idea Smart Farming that received products and services to a value of 75.000 SEK. The 3rd prize went to Leon Layas with the solution Advanced Lifering that received products and services to a value of 30.000 SEK.

Together with IBM, Tele2 also gave prizes in the category Smartest Startup Potential. The prizes went to Device Radio for their solution Garbage Collection and to Acando for their solution Air Quality Monitoring.

Stephen Bryant, CTO at Tele2 IoT, comments:
“The often-quoted William Gibson line about the future being here, but not evenly distributed is becoming less and less true with the rapid advances and availability of technology.”

“The future is here and competitors from many continents leveraged LPWA, cloud technologies and open hardware to quickly create and demonstrate use cases needed in many societies around the world.”

“I am thrilled to see that the winners of the competition could utilize the network to create real value for businesses and society. I wish the winners and all contestants the best of luck with their ideas in the future.”

Tele2 IoT launches innovation competition
IoT, Internet of Things, has already changed the way the society works as well as how businesses run their operations. However, we are still far from utilizing all of the great possibilities IoT enables.

Tele2 IoT is launching a competition where it lets companies test and experiment with its new LPWA network to come up with new ideas and innovations.

In May 2016, Tele2 IoT announced that it was going to construct a new IoT network covering the Greater Gothenburg area in collaboration with Talkpool AB. It is an LPWA (Low Power Wide Area) network, in this case built on the LoRa technology ideally suited for applications that require lower bandwidth. The key advantages with the network are that IoT linked devices will be able to survive for several years on the same battery and that the hardware required has attractive pricing that opens up for new use cases that were not addressable with cellular devices. This makes the network perfect for measuring, monitoring or locating everything from products and buildings to people and animals.

The new network is now launched. To test it and to give companies as well as individuals the possibility to explore commercial and technical opportunities that have not been possible before, Tele2 IoT is launching The Tele2 IoT Challenge: LPWA. The first 100 approved to join the competition will receive a developer’s kit from Tele2 IoT and its partners Microchip, Pubnub and IBM. The challenge starts with a kick-off in Gothenburg on February 8th where experts on the area will share their insights and hold workshops to further inspire the participants and guests at the event. The applicants then have about six weeks to come up with a solution that uses the LPWA network in a way that potentially could change their business, city or home. The finalists representing the most innovative solutions with regards to customer value and transformation potential will be announced during an event end of March.

Other partners making this event possible are Giesecke & Devrient, Stena, Avnet-Silica, Kerlink, Semtech, HiQ, Sony Mobile and Sigma Technology.

Stephen Bryant, CTO at Tele2 IoT, says:

“When most people think about IoT, they think about wearables, connected cars and smart homes. But the mass of the things to be connected in this world are industrial, agricultural and smart city applications and this is where LPWA technologies are a key enabler.”

He adds:
“I think Gothenburg is a great city for innovation with a strong industrial heritage, great university and track record of creating incredible products and technologies. It is the perfect place for the Tele2 IoT LPWA Challenge in 2017 and to put the spotlight on the LPWA and the types of solutions possible with this technology.”

Tele2 to provide 1-Fleet Alliance with IoTservices across Europe

Tele2 AB (Tele2), today announces that it has won the connectivity business of 1-Fleet Alliance, a grouping of seventeen different telematics service providers from across Europe.

Tele2 won the deal over nine other companies competing for the Europe-wide business.

Over the course of the three-year contract, Tele2 expects to deliver more than 150,000 SIM cards to enable the 1-Fleet Alliance member companies to deliver on their core business of providing telematics solutions.

1-Fleet Alliance is a European-wide network of telematics and fleet management service providers. 1-Fleet Alliance has a combined total of more than 24,000 customers with in excess of 403,000 tracking units currently in operation.

Rami Avidan, Managing Director, Tele2 IoT, comments:
“This win is a recognition of the strength of Tele2’s technology offering and flexible business model that can adapt to the needs of our partners across a range of different services. Tele2 has built a strong reputation with a number of telematics service providers over the years, including members of 1-Fleet Alliance, which has given us a deep understanding of the needs of the sector as a whole. This win was generated through the partnership with Sisteer that we announced earlier, and it shows that our cooperation really generates true value, for both our customers, partners and Tele2”.

Tiago Borges, Co-Founder and CEO, Inosat Global on behalf of 1-Fleet Alliance comments:

“Tele2’s flexible approach and its management platform combined with its attractive pricing and experience in working with a number of 1-Fleet Alliance members were amongst the key reasons for selecting Tele2. On top of that, Tele2 IoT provided outstanding customer support during the trial and testing phase.”

Tele2 AB (Tele2) today announces a strengthened presence and offering for its Internet of Things (IoT) implementations in France.

During the last couple of months, Tele2 IoT has recruited dedicated resources in France and signed a strategic partnership with Sisteer, in order to secure the right setup needed to support the important IoT market that France represents. Tele2 IoT expects the total number of connections in France to double within three years.

Rami Avidan, Managing Director at Tele2 IoT, comments:
“France is a large and central IoT market in Europe, so we are happy to announce our strong partnership with Sisteer. Their solid local presence will complement our own resources in a fantastic way, and together we will be very competitive in supporting the French market.”
