AirPrime™ embedded wireless module and embedded application framework provide simple path to wireless machine-to-machine communication for remote collection of metering information.
Sierra Wireless today announced that GÖRLITZ AG, a leading manufacturer of advanced meter reading (AMR) and energy information management systems, has selected Sierra Wireless to provide the wireless connectivity solution for its Ethernet / GPRS router.
The router connects to energy meters, allowing utilities to remotely collect energy usage data.
The Sierra Wireless solution combines an AirPrime™ Q2686 embedded wireless module with the Open AT® framework, which includes pre-packaged libraries that streamline development time and help customers like GÖRLITZ get their products to market quickly. GÖRLITZ was seeking an end-to-end solution that offered key elements already pre-packaged and proven, including TCP/IP stack, FTP, and network address translation (NAT). The company also wanted an operating system designed for machine-to-machine (M2M) metering applications, and application development needed to be simple, using standard C/C++ and easy-to-use development tools. Finally, GÖRLITZ required industrial grade hardware that was proven in energy applications. Sierra Wireless offered the quality hardware and the high level of technical support GÖRLITZ was seeking, along with extensive experience in providing wireless machine-to-machine solutions for energy applications.
“Sierra Wireless provided all of the elements we needed to put together the wireless solution we were looking for, along with the expertise to help us along the way,” said Helmut Ratzenhofer, Chief Executive Officer for GÖRLITZ Austria GmbH.
“Working with Sierra Wireless allowed us to focus on our own core strengths – we didn’t need to become wireless experts to integrate the connectivity we needed and get our router to market quickly.”
Didier Dutronc, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Embedded Solutions for Sierra Wireless, said:
“We recognize that many of our customers are not wireless experts, and the integration of cellular connectivity into their products is often only a small part of the product’s overall design.”
“That’s why Sierra Wireless solutions are designed to provide everything they need – from a wide variety of embedded wireless modules, to development tools and software that streamlines integration, to a full device and asset management solution that can support the final products deployed in the field. We make the wireless integration as simple as possible so that our customers can focus their efforts on their own core competencies and get their products to market quickly.”
